The present study had two major goals: to explore the relationship between binge eating and coping strategies in a sample of Spanish adolescents and to examine the adolescents' concept of binge eating. Two hundred and fifty-nine adolescents from a secondary school completed the Adolescent Coping Scale (ACS; Frydenberg & Lewis, 1993) and the Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE; Henderson & Freeman, 1987), as well as additional questions regarding the binge-eating episodes. The results show that the adolescents who reported binge eating used more avoidance coping strategies than those who did not engage in this behavior. Adolescents took into account mainly the amount of food eaten when defining a binge with few of them mentioning loss of control in their descriptions. The results of the study have implications for the prevention of this behavior. The development of constructive ways for solving daily problems and coping with stressors may be a possible prevention strategy for this behaviour in adolescence. ABSTRACTSometimos, our organism interprets specific types of intemal speech as voices coming from the outside. The aim of this study was to discover if patients wíith auditory hallucinations differ from other clinical groups in the discrimination/ attribution about the origin of the stimuli. Subjects were classified according to their symptomatology (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale). The enx)rs in a central monitoring task were considered as criterion variable. Only differences were found in monitoring under those conditions of verbal generation where subject's production is restricted. In that situation, psychotic patients with auditory hallucinations attribute erroneusly to an extemal agency their own productions. Further research should explore verbal and control motor functions (voluntary and non voluntary actions) that define processes of monitoring more accurately.
The purpose of this paper is to summarize our current knowledge about pharmacological, psychosocial, and other emerging treatments for psychoses. Although antipsychotic medications are the mainstay of treatment for psychoses, and particularly for schizophrenia, the degree of improvement in positive symptoms is moderate, and has no demonstrable efficacy against positive enduring or deficit negative symptoms. Indeed, many patients continue to suffer from persistent positive symptoms and relapses, particularly when they fail to adhere to prescribed medications. This underlines the need for additional treatment methods to help patients understand and manage their disorders, alleviate symptoms, improve adherence, social functioning and quality of life, and solve problems that do not fully respond to medication. Nowadays, comprehensive treatment entails a multi-modal approach, including medication, psychotherapy and social treatments (psychoeducation and coping-oriented interventions, cognitive behaviour therapy, cognitive remediation, social skills training and assertive community treatment), as well as assistance with housing and financial sustenance. In the foreseeable future, phase-specific interventions ought to be applied to different stages of psychoses.
