Los suelos salinos afectan el crecimiento y rendimiento de los pastizales y disminuyen la disponibilidad de forrajes para la alimentación animal. Objetivo: Evaluar la emergencia, crecimiento y producción de biomasa de los pastos Cayman (BR/1752) y Cobra (BR/1794) en condiciones de estrés salino inducido por la sal NaCl a siete niveles de conductividad eléctrica (CE): 0, 2, 4, 6, 10, 12 y 15 dS m-1. Metodología: en invernadero, se establecieron macetas experimentales con agrolita, sembradas a una densidad de 25 semillas por maceta para evaluar la emergencia; posteriormente se realizó un aclareo para dejar tres plantas por maceta en un diseño completamente al azar. El riego consistió en reponer el agua perdida por evapotranspiración, mediante el suministro de agua destilada. El experimento abarcó un periodo de 60 días durante los cuales se determinó la altura y el diámetro del tallo, número de hijuelos, el número de hojas, la longitud de raíz y producción de biomasa. Los resultados indican que al aumentar la conductividad eléctrica de las soluciones salinas, ambos pastos disminuyeron de manera diferencial el porcentaje de emergencia, la altura y el diámetro del tallo, el número de hijuelos y el número de hojas, con una disminución en la producción de biomasa de las plantas, más pronunciado en pasto Cayman que en pasto Cobra. Entre cultivares se presentaron diferencias de tolerancia; ya que en el pasto Cayman esta disminución se produjo a CE ≥ 10 dS m-1, mientras que en el pasto Cobra la producción de biomasa fue afectada signif icativamente (P = 0.05) a partir de CE ≥ 12 dS m-1.
Las plantas son consumidas por diversos organismos, esta situación pone en riesgo su sobrevivencia, por ello han desarrollado mecanismos de defensa que evitan su ingesta. Por ejemplo, adaptaciones anatómicas, defensas químicas o metabolitos secundarios. Estos fitoquímicos inhiben el ataque de patógenos, provocan irritación al contacto, afectan los sistemas cutáneo, gastrointestinal, cardíaco y nervioso de los herbívoros o pueden provocar la muerte. Los rumiantes tienen adaptaciones mecánicas, fisiológicas y etológicas para evadir las defensas vegetales: rechazo, regulación y biotransformación. Desarrollaron adaptaciones anatomo-fisiológicas para albergar simbiontes microbianos para degradar celulosa y toxinas vegetales. Algunos metabolitos secundarios pueden tener efectos benéficos en alimentación o medicina animal, pero se requiere de mayor estudio sobre el tema.
Los pastos tropicales poseen baja concentración de proteína cruda y mayor fibra detergente neutra. Los pastos fermentados en el rumen, presentan diferentes valores de digestibilidad, concentración de ácidos grasos volátiles (AGV), producción de metano (CH4) y bióxido de carbono (CO2). Objetivo: determinar la composición química, caracterizar la fermentación y estimar la producción de CH4 y CO2 in vitro en pastos tropicales de Oaxaca. Materiales y métodos. Los pastos (0.5 g de materia seca): Cynodon nlemfuensis, Andropogon gayanus, Penissetum purpureum cv. Taiwán Morado, Penissetum purpureum cv. Maralfalfa y Panicum maximum, fueron incubados con 45 mL de medio para microorganismos anaerobios, y depositados en viales de vidrio de 100 mL mantenidos en condiciones anaerobias con CO2. Los pastos fueron inoculados con cinco mL de fluido ruminal de bovino e incubados a 39 °C durante 72 h. A las 6, 12, 24, 48 72 h se determinó la producción de biogás y la población de microorganismos. La concentración de AGV, pH y degradación de la materia seca in vitro (DIVMS) se determinaron a 72 h. A 24, 48 y 72 h se midió la producción de CH4 y CO2. Las variables se evaluaron mediante un diseño completamente aleatorizado utilizando cinco repeticiones por tratamiento, la comparación de medias se realizó mediante la prueba de Tukey. Cynodon nlemfuensis tuvo el mayor contenido de proteína cruda (P = 0.05). Las poblaciones de bacterias celulolíticas presentaron menor conteo en Andropogon gayanus así como en Panicum máximum (P < 0.05). Cynodon nlemfuensis, Andropogon gayanus y Pennisetum purpureum cv. Taiwán Morado presentaron menores concentraciones de acetato (P < 0.05), Pannicum maximum tuvo mayor concentración de propionato (P < 0.05). Pennisetum purpureum cv. Maralfalfa presentó la mayor DIVMS y produjo menor volumen de CH4 (P < 0.05), Cynodon nlemfuensis y Pannicum maximum produjeron menores volúmenes de CO2 (P < 0.05).
El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar la degradabilidad de la materia seca (MS) y de carotenos de la alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) in vitro. Las muestras se incubaron a 39 °C a 0, 12, 24, 48 y 72 h. Los datos se procesaron con un análisis de varianza, prueba de Tukey (p < 0.05). Los resultados del análisis de la alfalfa fueron (%): MS = 24.42, MO = 96.79, PC = 21.22, FDA = 29.11, FDN = 36.24, Cenizas = 3.21 y Carotenos totales = 254.6 mg g−1. El 43% de MS desapareció a las 12 h (P < 0.001), mientras de 12 a 72 h, la MS alcanzó una degradación de 62% (P < 0.001). La degradación de los carotenos de la alfalfa está asociada con el ritmo de la degradación de la MS, el estudio permitió obtener una simulación del rumen de bovinos indicando que la mayor parte de los carotenos desaparecen en menos de 12 h de incubación.
