This paper is based on the project ‘Recognition of Tacit Skills and Knowledge in Work Re‐entry’ carried out as a part of the ESRC‐funded Research Network ‘Improving Incentives to Learning in the Workplace’. The network aims to contribute to improved practice among a wide range of practitioners. The study has investigated the part played by tacit forms of personal competences in the education, training and work re‐entry of adult learners. The models of learning produced within this study with the assistance of the Dynamic Concept Analysis method are used to provide a better understanding of individual case studies.
This paper demonstrates the use of conceptual modelling to assist with the competence development of adult learners with interrupted occupational and learning careers. The research introduces a self-evaluation approach used with a group of adult female students in the United Kingdom. The study aimed at increasing learners' awareness of the qualities and nature of their individual learning processes. The paper applies Kontiainen's dynamic concept analysis modelling method as a tool to assist individual students in the evaluation of their personal competences in learning. The findings of the current study suggest that providing adult learners with opportunities to evaluate their own competences may facilitate a process of making their skills visible to themselves as well as to their tutors and employers. This aims to increase their motivation to use and develop their competences. The paper provides an example and a demonstration of the self-evaluation process in action illustrated by two case studies.
Kontiainen, S.1974. Authoritarian Attitudes of Supervisors in Relation to the Effects of Supervision as Assessed by Student Teachers. Scand. J. educ. Res. 18,[79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94]. The present study is a continuation of previous analyses of the behaviour of supervisors in school practice context by the author (Kontainen 1973). These studies are part of a wider research project on teacher training in Finland, the Helsinki-Turku Project. In this paper authoritarian attitudes of supervisors are analysed in relation to the effects of supervision on personal development of student teachers as assessed by the student teachers themselves. How authoritarian attitudes are experienced by students teachers is shown in the study to depend essentially on the other characteristics of the behaviour of supervisors combined with these attitudes. The analyses showed, however, that authoritarian attitudes, as defined in the paper, very seldom result in a positive effect of supervision; the effect tends to be negative or at best neutral or moderate.
Millaista korkea-asteen täydennys koulutusta?-kommentteja tieteellisestä täydennyskoulutuksesta Tieteellinen täydennyskoulutus on kantava na käsitteenä Jaakko Virkkusen ja Kari Toi kan artikkelissa Aikuiskasvatus 3/82-lehdes sä. Koska kirjoittajat eivät vaivaudu käsitettä sen paremmin määrittelemään, riittänee, kun tulkitsemme sen tarkoittavan jollain tavalla "hyvää" korkeakoulun perusluonteen mu kaista täydennyskoulutusta.
