Desmoplastic fibroblastoma (Collagenous fibroma) is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that disseminates widely and can be intramuscular or subcutaneously. There are seven reported cases in the oral cavity so far. We reported a novel case of collagenous fibroma that has been found in the anterior part of maxilla in a 58-year-old woman as an intraosseous radiolucent lesion that has been discovered during routine radiography. Histopathologically, spindle and stellate-shaped fibroblasts in a collagen-rich stroma as well as binucleated and multinucleated fibroblasts with prominent nucleoli were seen. Desmoplastic fibroblastoma could be found in jaw bones and excision of the lesion is curative, and no aggressive growth has been reported.
CDC7 is a serine/threonine kinase which has an essential role in initiation of DNA proliferation and S phase. It increases the invasion and proliferation in many pathologic lesions. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of CDC7 in the most common odontogenic cysts. We evaluated 17 dentigerous cysts, 18 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) and 13 radicular cysts immunohistochemically. The mean expression of CDC7 was analyzed using ANOVA and Post-HOC methods. All specimens revealed CDC7 expression. Higher expression of CDC7 in OKC and radicular cyst was shown in comparison to dentigerous cyst (P < 0.001), while radicular cyst and OKC groups showed no difference in CDC7 expression (P = 0.738). The high expression of CDC7 in OKC suggests that this protein could be related to the higher proliferation rate and invasiveness of OKC. On the other hand, the higher CDC7 expression in radicular cyst may simply be related to inflammation as this cyst is neither aggressive nor invasive.
Background: Cytotoxic effects of Frankincense resin have been shown on some cancer cell lines. Due to its low side effects, this study was designed to evaluate the anticancer properties of water soluble elements of Frankincense oleo-gum-resin on human oral squamous cell carcinoma cell line. Methods:Oleo-gum-resin was macerated in ethanol. After filtration, the water soluble fraction of dried residue was extracted. KB cells were treated with 0, 62.5, 125, 250 and 500 µg/mL concentrations of obtained Frankincense aqueous fractions and with Doxorubicin as positive control. Frankincense induced cell cytotoxicity; apoptosis and proliferation were investigated using WST assay, Annexin V-FITC/PI, and Ki-67 staining, respectively. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test by SPSS 17 software.Results: IC50 of 137.21 µg/mL was obtained from Frankincense aqueous fraction after 48 hours. The percentage of apoptotic cells was elevated in a time-and dose-dependent manner. There was no statistical difference in the Ki-67 expression of KB cells, using different concentration of Frankincense aqueous fraction after 24 and 48 hours (P = 0.083). Doxorubicin inhibited cells growth essentially through apoptosis. Conclusions:Frankincense aqueous fractions seem to suppress KB cell growth through the induction of apoptosis and necrosis rather than the inhibition of proliferation and hence might be a potential anticancer agent. Structural analysis and purification of potent components are suggested for determining more definitive results.
Background: On the 26 th anniversary of the International Day of Older Persons in 2015 with the slogan "the elderly, advocates of dynamism, growth, and the youth of the population", 12% (900 million individuals) of the world population were above 65 years of age. It is estimated that this rate will reach 22% (2 milliard individuals) by 2050. The purpose of the present study was to determine the status of the elderly and bacterial infections, their causes, prevention, and control methods. Materials and Methods: In the present study, Magiran, SID, CAB Direct, PubMed, CDC, and World Health Organization (WHO) databases were searched using the keywords bacterial infections, old age, and control methods. The inclusion criteria included articles related to the study topic in English or Farsi. After the assessment of the articles, 40 articles were studied in detail. Results: Due to the relative increase in the duration of life and diseases related to old age, the recurrence of some infections has been observed in the elderly. Immune system dysfunction, lifestyle, living area, elderly care method, and underlying diseases can be effective on aging and acquiring of infectious diseases. In elderly patients, infections, unlike in young adults, do not have evident symptoms. More than 30% of cases of mortality among the elderly are due to infectious diseases. The most common infections in the elderly are urinary tract, respiratory, unspecified, intra-abdominal, skin, and catheter-related infections. Conclusions: Infectious diseases are of grave importance in the quantity of life and quality of life (QOL) of the elderly. Thus, the determination of their causes, the most common infectious diseases, and their causal factors in the world, developing countries, and Iran can play an important role in the management of these diseases.
