Bu çalışmanın amacı, ortaokul matematik öğretmeni adaylarının cebir kavramı ile ilgili algılarını metaforlar yardımıyla incelemektir. Çalışmanın araştırma modeli olarak olgu bilim yaklaşımı kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubu ölçüt örneklemeye göre belirlenmiştir. Bu bağlamda, 2021-2022 bahar döneminde ilköğretim matematik öğretmenliği programında üçüncü ve dördüncü sınıfta öğrenim görmekte olan 134 öğretmen adayı çalışma grubunu oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada üç bölümden oluşan bir form, veri toplama aracı olarak kullanılmıştır. Metaforların analizi ve yorumlanmasında dört aşamadan (adlandırma, eleme, kategori ve geçerlik-güvenirlik) oluşan bir süreç takip edilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, matematik öğretmeni adaylarının cebir kavramı hakkında geçerli 110 metafor olmak üzere 82 farklı metafor geliştirdikleri ortaya çıkmıştır. En sık kullanılan metaforlar ise hayat, deniz, bulmaca ve oyundur. Matematik öğretmeni adaylarının geliştirdikleri metaforları belirleme nedenleri olarak sundukları gerekçeler analiz edilmiş ve geliştirdikleri metaforların dokuz farklı kategoride toplandığı görülmüştür. Bu kategoriler; zor ve karmaşık, sistematik/kurallı, matematiğin temeli/dili, sonsuz/geniş, çaba gerektiren, soyut, eğlenceli, olumlu/olumsuz ve diğer şeklindedir. Öğretmen adaylarının cebir algılarının daha çok, zor ve karmaşık kategorisinde toplandığı ve cebire yönelik olumsuz bir bakış açısına sahip oldukları sonuçlarına ulaşılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, bu çalışmada matematik öğretmeni adaylarının cebir kavramına yönelik olarak zengin bir metaforik algıya sahip ve cebire karşı çoğunlukla olumsuz bir düşünce yapısında oldukları saptanmıştır.
