No Brasil, P. sulphureus ocorre nos biomas Floresta Amazônica e Mata Atlântica. Em novembro de 2007 foi obtido o primeiro registro de P. sulphureus para o Estado do Alagoas, no município de Campo Alegre, Nordeste do Brasil. O espécime de P. sulphureus está depositado na coleção herpetológica do Museu de História Natural, Universidade Federal de Alagoas (MUFAL).

A espécie, descrita em 2019, é fossorial e de difícil coleta. A área em que foi registrada não é protegida e a vegetação natural da região é impactada por atividades agropecuárias, retirada de lenha e incêndios. No entanto, a região ainda é pouco amostrada para o grupo, sua distribuição não é bem conhecida e não se sabe o impacto das ameaças sobre a espécie. Portanto, Amphisbaena longinqua foi avaliada como Dados Insuficientes (DD).
