A novel air-stable sodium iron hexacyanoferrate (R-Na1.92Fe[Fe(CN)6]) with rhombohedral structure is demonstrated to be a scalable, low-cost cathode material for sodium-ion batteries exhibiting high capacity, long cycle life, and good rate capability. The cycling mechanism of the iron redox is clarified and understood through synchrotron-based soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which also reveals the correlation between the physical properties and the cell performance of this novel material. More importantly, successful preparation of a dehydrated iron hexacyanoferrate with high sodium-ion concentration enables the fabrication of a discharged sodium-ion battery with a non-sodium metal anode, and the manufacturing feasibility of low cost sodium-ion batteries with existing lithium-ion battery infrastructures has been tested.

By modifying the surface of nanoporous alumina membranes using mixtures of a photochromic spiropyran and hydrophobic molecules, it is possible to control the admission of water into the membrane using light. When the spiropyran is in the thermally stable, relatively hydrophobic closed form, the membrane is not wet by an aqueous solution. Upon exposure to UV light, the spiropyran photoisomerizes to the more polar merocyanine form, allowing water to enter the pores and cross the membrane. Thus, the photosensitive membrane acts as a burst valve, allowing the transport of water and ions across the membrane. If the aqueous solution contains ions, then the membrane acts as an electrical switch; photoisomerization leads to a two-order-of-magnitude increase in ionic conductance, allowing a current to flow across the membrane. Exposure to visible light causes photoisomerization of the merocyanine back to the closed, spiro form, but dewetting of the membrane does not occur spontaneously, due to a high activation barrier.

This report provides an overview of development activities that enable the scale‐up and thereby a pathway toward the commercialization of sodium‐ion battery technologies for the energy storage market. The electrochemical performance of active materials and full cell performance of batteries developed by two startup companies, Novasis Energies, Inc. and Faradion Limited, are discussed in detail. Both companies offer low‐cost sodium‐ion battery chemistries with uniquely developed active materials that afford high rate capability and cycling stability. Their technologies are highly scalable due to the implementation of abundant and predominantly nontoxic elements and the ability to utilize common battery fabrication and manufacturing equipment. Both companies utilize active materials that are cost competitive compared to low‐cost lithium‐ion battery materials while exhibiting very similar specific capacity. In addition, improved safety characteristics with respect to operation and transportation distinguish the described sodium‐ion batteries from their incumbent lithium‐ion counterparts. The featured technology is particularly attractive for large‐scale energy storage applications.

Na-ion batteries are emerging as one of the most promising energy storage technologies, particularly for grid-level applications. Among anode candidate materials, hard carbon is very attractive due to its high capacity and low cost. However, hard carbon anodes often suffer a low first-cycle Coulombic efficiency and fast capacity fading. In this study, we discover that doping graphene oxide into sucrose, the precursor for hard carbon, can effectively reduce the specific surface area of hard carbon to as low as 5.4 m(2)/g. We further reveal that such doping can effectively prevent foaming during caramelization of sucrose and extend the pyrolysis burnoff of sucrose caramel over a wider temperature range. The obtained low-surface-area hard carbon greatly improves the first-cycle Coulombic efficiency from 74% to 83% and delivers a very stable cyclic life with 95% of capacity retention after 200 cycles.

The synthesis and electrochemical and photophysical studies of a series of alkyne-linked zinc-porphyrin-[60]fullerene dyads are described. These dyads represent a new class of fully conjugated donor-acceptor systems. An alkynyl-fullerene synthon was synthesized by a nucleophilic addition reaction, and was then oxidatively coupled with a series of alkynyl tetra-aryl zinc-porphyrins with 1-3 alkyne units. Cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry studies confirmed that the porphyrin and fullerene are electronically coupled and that the degree of electronic interaction decreases with increasing length of the alkyne bridge. In toluene, energy transfer from the excited zinc-porphyrin singlet to the fullerene moiety occurs, affording fullerene triplet quantum yields of greater than 90 %. These dyads exhibit very rapid photoinduced electron transfer in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and benzonitrile (PhCN), which is consistent with normal Marcus behavior. Slower rates for charge recombination in THF versus PhCN clearly indicate that charge-recombination events are occurring in the Marcus inverted region. Exceptionally small attenuation factors (beta) of 0.06+/-0.005 A(-1) demonstrate that the triple bond is an effective mediator of electronic interaction in zinc-porphyrin-alkyne-fullerene molecular wires.

The movement of a liquid droplet on a flat surface functionalized with a photochromic azobenzene may be driven by the irradiation of spatially distinct areas of the drop with different UV and visible light fluxes to create a gradient in the surface tension. In order to better understand and control this phenomenon, we have measured the wetting characteristics of these surfaces for a variety of liquids after UV and visible light irradiation. The results are used to approximate the components of the azobenzene surface energy under UV and visible light using the van Oss-Chaudhury-Good equation. These components, in combination with liquid parameters, allow one to estimate the strength of the surface interaction as given by the advancing contact angle for various liquids. The azobenzene monolayers were formed on smooth air-oxidized Si surfaces through 3-aminopropylmethyldiethoxysilane linkages. The experimental advancing and receding contact angles were determined following azobenzene photoisomerization under visible and ultraviolet (UV) light. Reversible light-induced advancing contact-angle changes ranging from 8 to 16 degrees were observed. A large reversible change in contact angle by photoswitching of 12.4 degrees was achieved for water. The millimeter-scale transport of 5 microL droplets of certain liquids was achieved by creating a spatial gradient in visible/UV light across the droplets. A criterion for light-induced motion of droplets is shown to be consistent with the response of a variety of liquids. The type of light-driven fluid movement observed could have applications in microfluidic devices.

Three porphyrin-fullerene dyads, in which a diyne bridge links C(60) with a beta-position on a tetraarylporphyrin, have been synthesized. The free-base dyad was prepared, as well as the corresponding Zn(II) and Ni(II) materials. These represent the first examples of a new class of conjugatively linked electron donor-acceptor systems in which pi-conjugation extends from the porphyrin ring system directly to the fullerene surface. The processes that occur following photoexcitation of these dyads were examined using fluorescence and transient absorption techniques on the femtosecond, picosecond, and nanosecond time scales. In sharp contrast to the photodynamics associated with singlet excited-state decay of reference tetraphenylporphyrins (ZnTPP, NiTPP, and H(2)TPP), the diyne-linked dyads undergo ultrafast (<10 ps) singlet excited-state deactivation in toluene, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and benzonitrile (PhCN). Transient absorption techniques with the ZnP-C(60) dyad clearly show that in toluene intramolecular energy transfer (EnT) to ultimately generate C(60) triplet excited states is the dominant singlet decay mechanism, while intramolecular electron transfer (ET) dominates in THF and PhCN to give the ZnP(*+)/C(60)(*-) charge-separated radical ion pair (CSRP). Electrochemical studies indicate that there is no significant charge transfer in the ground states of these systems. The lifetime of ZnP(*+)/C(60)(*-) in PhCN was approximately 40 ps, determined by two different types of transient absorption measurement in two different laboratories. Thus, in this system, the ratio of the rates for charge separation (k(CS)) to rates for charge recombination (k(CR)), k(CS)/k(CR), is quite small, approximately 7. The fact that charge separation (CS) rates increase with increasing solvent polarity is consistent with this process occurring in the normal region of the Marcus curve, while the slower charge recombination (CR) rates in less polar solvents indicate that the CR process occurs in the Marcus inverted region. While photoinduced ET occurs on a similar time scale in a related dyad 15 in which a diethynyl bridge connects C(60) to the para position of a meso phenyl moiety of a tetrarylporphyrin, CR occurs much more slowly; i.e., k(CS)/k(CR) approximately equal to 7400. Thus, the position at which the conjugative linker is attached to the porphyrin moiety has a dramatic influence on k(CR) but not on k(CS). On the basis of electron density calculations, we tentatively conclude that unfavorable orbital symmetries inhibit charge recombination in 15 vis a vis the beta-linked dyads.

A triethanolamine-protected silane, 1-(3'-amino)propylsilatrane, was incorporated into the structure of porphyrin- and ruthenium-based dyes and used to link them to transparent semiconductor nanoparticulate metal oxide films. Silatrane reacts with the metal oxide to form strong, covalent silyl ether bonds. In this study, silatrane-functionalized dyes and analogous carboxylate-functionalized dyes were used as visible light sensitizers for porous nanoparticulate SnO(2) photoanodes. The performance of the dyes was compared in photoelectrochemical cells incorporating either non-regenerative or regenerative redox components. The non-regenerative cell used NADH (beta-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) as a sacrificial electron donor and Hg(2)SO(4)/Hg as a sacrificial cathode, whereas the regenerative cell used the iodide/triiodide redox couple. Experiments showed that the silyl ether bonding gave the electrodes increased stability toward sensitizer desorption compared to carboxylate surface linkages. Porphyrin-silatrane dyes also demonstrated similar or better performance than their carboxylate analogs in photoelectrochemical cells. The improvement correlates with the results from transient absorbance spectroscopy, which show that the longer linker on the silatrane porphyrins slows charge recombination between oxidized porphyrin and the electrode surface. The improved photoelectrochemical cell efficiency and stability of the silatrane-based dyes compared to carboxylates demonstrate that silatranes are promising agents for bonding organic molecules to metal oxide surfaces.
