Patients with FND reported reduced resilience, and CD-RISC scores covaried with other important predisposing vulnerabilities for the development of FND. Future research should investigate if the CD-RISC is predictive of clinical outcomes in patients with FND.
Despite advancements in the assessment and management of functional neurological disorder (FND), the feasibility of implementing a new standard of care remains unclear. Chart reviews were performed for 100 patients with motor FND to investigate factors related to treatment adherence and clinical improvement over an average follow-up of 7 months. Of 81 patients who returned for follow-up, a history of chronic pain disorder inversely correlated with improvement. Of the 50 individuals newly referred for treatment, adherence correlated with improvement, while having abnormal neuroimaging inversely correlated with improvement. This study supports the feasibility of applying a new standard of care for FND.
Numerous physical and psychiatric effects can be attributed to the cessation of psychotropic medications, similar to those agents with abuse potential. In addition, drug withdrawal can exacerbate underlying psychiatric conditions and alter disease course and long-term outcomes. This article discusses specific withdrawal syndromes associated with several classes of psychotropic medications to increase prescriber awareness when tapering and discontinuing psychotropic medications, thereby facilitating discussions with patients about the risks of withdrawal.
