Summary Bx, a new allele at the ABO locus, is described. The blood is characterized by the cells grouping as O and the serum grouping as B, showing the necessity for serum grouping as a routine. Experimental evidence shows that the red cells of Bx people contain very little B antigen, but the serum and saliva contain B substances. Consideration is given to the possible explanations, absence of genes responsible for the agglutinogens in the red cells, but not for the saliva or serum antigens, or alternatively, a suppressor gene (or genes) preventing the expression of the genes in so far as the red cells are concerned. Landsteiner's Law and the findings on these bloods are discussed.
