The study was conducted to investigate the heavy metal contamination in water, sediment and fishes from the Passur river in the Mongla port area near Sundarbans mangrove during the period from January to June 2013. The water samples were collected from five different sampling stations as St-1 (upstream-1km upper from port area), St-2 (port area), St-3 (downstream-1km lower from port area), St-4 (tributary) and St-5 (1 km lower from tributary). Sediment samples were collected monthly from Station-1, 2 and 3 during the study period. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Fe and Cr) in water were found from water much lower than the permissible level. The concentrations of five heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Fe) in the sediment samples were Fe at 23481.61 to 15339.4 mg/kg, while other metals were much lower and found little difference among different months. The result indicated that passerious pollution in the Passur river is due to heavy metals; whereas the concentrations of elements found could mainly be attributed to geological sources. To maintain the sound environment and healthy ecosystem of the river and the surrounding areas, need proper management and monitoring of water quality of the river.
The study was conducted to investigate the heavy metal contamination in fishes and shrimps from the Passur River near the world famous Sundarban mangroves located in the southwestern part of Bangladesh, during the period from January to June 2013. The fish (Liza parse) and shrimp (Penaeus monodon) samples were collected from two stations as St-1 (Katakhali-1 km upper from port areaupstream) and St-2 (Amtola-1 km lower from port area-downstream) monthly for three months in January (winter), March (pre monsoon) and May (Monsoon). Before analysis, a bit of muscle, the whole liver and two gill arches from each fish and shrimp were removed. Samples of tissues from each fish and shrimp were removed, weighed and dried. A microwave digestion system was used to prepare the samples for analysis. After digestion residue diluted with 25 ml 2.5% HNO 3 . The water used was deionized and distilled. The metal analyses of samples (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) were carried out by using UNICAM-929 atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) in SGS Bangladesh Limited, Dhaka-1205, Bangladesh. Among the heavy metals studied Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were detected in fish and shrimp species were within acceptable limits by FAO standards. The results of this study indicated that a general absence of serious pollution in the Passur River is due to heavy metals; whereas the concentrations of elements found could mainly be attributed to geological sources. In this regard, to maintain the water and sediment qualities as well as the sound and safe aquatic life of the river need proper monitoring and management by the relevant authorities of the Government of Bangladesh.
The Principal determination of the study was to fix the extent of environmental sentience among the different classes of industrial workers. A hundred ten workers were selected through purposive sampling technique from several industries in the region of Tangail district, Bangladesh. Among the selected workers, the female respondents were 37 in number and rests of the 73 were male. The workers were asked questions to appraise their level of understanding considering environment, environmental issues, and their persuasion to solve the different environmental problems. The determinations disclosed that, majority (91.8%) of the workers have approximately general conception about environment, idea about pollution of environmental constituents, Global warming and climate change awareness. From the view of most (85.5%) of the workers, the country is most vulnerable due to environmental pollution and not executing competent rules and ordinance along with public awareness.
