The ability to spatially modulate the electronic properties of solids has led to landmark discoveries in condensed matter physics as well as new electronic applications. Although crystals of strongly correlated metals exhibit a diverse set of electronic ground states, few approaches to spatially modulating their properties exist. Here we demonstrate spatial control over the superconducting state in mesoscale samples of the canonical heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn5. We use a focused ion beam (FIB) to pattern crystals on the microscale, which tailors the strain induced by differential thermal contraction into specific areas of the device. The resulting non-uniform strain fields induce complex patterns of superconductivity due to the strong dependence of the transition temperature on the strength and direction of strain. Electrical transport and magnetic imaging of devices with different geometry show that the obtained spatial modulation of superconductivity agrees with predictions based on finite element simulations. These results present a generic approach to manipulating electronic order on micrometer length scales in strongly correlated matter.Heavy fermion materials exhibit a rich competition between metallic, superconducting, and magnetically ordered ground states. We reassess progress in the field of biomolecular modeling and simulation, following up on our perspective published in 2011. By reviewing metrics for the field's productivity and providing examples of success, we underscore the productive phase of the field, whose short-term expectations were overestimated and long-term effects underestimated. Such successes include prediction of structures and mechanisms; generation of new insights into biomolecular activity; and thriving collaborations between modeling and experimentation, including experiments driven by modeling. We also discuss the impact of field exercises and web games on the field's progress. Overall, we note tremendous success by the biomolecular modeling community in utilization of computer power; improvement in force fields; and development and application of new algorithms, notably machine learning and artificial intelligence. The combined advances are enhancing the accuracy and scope of modeling and simulation, establishing an exemplary discipline where experiment and theory or simulations are full partners. † Authors contributed equally to this work.URu2Si2 exhibits a clear phase transition at THO = 17.5 K to a low-temperature phase known as "hidden order" (HO). Even the most basic information needed to construct a theory of this state-such as the number of components in the order parameter-has been lacking. Here we use resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) and machine learning to determine that the order parameter of HO is one-dimensional (singlet), ruling out a large class of theories based on twodimensional (doublet) order parameters. This strict constraint is independent of any microscopic mechanism, and independent of other symmetries that HO may break. Our technique is general for second-order phase transitions, and can discriminate between nematic (singlet) versus loop current (doublet) order in the high-Tc cuprates, and conventional (singlet) versus the proposed px + ipy (doublet) superconductivity in Sr2RuO4. The machine learning framework we develop should be readily adaptable to other spectroscopic techniques where missing resonances confound traditional analysis, such as NMR.

One of the main developments in unconventional superconductivity in the past two decades has been the discovery that most unconventional superconductors form phase diagrams that also contain other strongly correlated states. Many systems of interest are therefore close to more than one instability, and tuning between the resultant ordered phases is the subject of intense research1. In recent years, uniaxial pressure applied using piezoelectric-based devices has been shown to be a particularly versatile new method of tuning2,3, leading to experiments that have advanced our understanding of the fascinating unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4 (refs. 4–9). Here we map out its phase diagram using high-precision measurements of the elastocaloric effect in what we believe to be the first such study including both the normal and the superconducting states. We observe a strong entropy quench on entering the superconducting state, in excellent agreement with a model calculation for pairing at the Van Hove point, and obtain a quantitative estimate of the entropy change associated with entry to a magnetic state that is observed in proximity to the superconductivity. The phase diagram is intriguing both for its similarity to those seen in other families of unconventional superconductors and for extra features unique, so far, to Sr2RuO4.

In recent times, quadratic magneto-optic Kerr effect (QMOKE) is emerging as an important experimental tool to investigate higher-order spin-orbit interactions in magnetic thin films and heterostructures. We have designed and constructed a simple, cost-effective QMOKE measurement system using permanent magnets. The permanent magnets are mounted on the inner surface of a cylindrical ferromagnetic yoke which can be rotated about its axis. Our system is sensitive to both the quadratic and linear MOKE signals. We use rotating field method to extract the QMOKE components in saturation. This system is capable of extracting the QMOKE signal from single crystals and thin film samples. Here we present the construction and working of the QMOKE measurement system using permanent magnets and report, for the first time, the QMOKE signal from FeO single crystal.

We measure the full elastic tensors of Mn3Ge and Mn3Sn as a function of temperature through their respective antiferromagnetic phase transitions. Large discontinuities in the bulk moduli at the Néel transitions indicate strong magnetoelastic coupling in both compounds. Strikingly, the discontinuities are nearly a factor of 10 larger in Mn3Ge than in Mn3Sn. We use the magnitudes of the discontinuities to calculate the pressure derivatives of the Néel temperature, which are 39 K/GPa 14.3 K/GPa for Mn3Ge and Mn3Sn, respectively. We measured the in-plane shear modulus c66, which couples strongly to the magnetic order, in magnetic fields up to 18 T and found quantitatively similar behavior in both compounds. Recent measurements have demonstrated strong piezomagnetism in Mn3Sn: our results suggest that Mn3Ge may be an even better candidate for this effect.
