Growth and reproduction of chub population were investigated in Lake Yeniçağa, Bolu, Turkey. A total of 729 chub were sampled between March 2009 and July 2010. The age of sampled chub ranged from 1+ to 8+. According to the sex ratios of female and male (2.98:1.00), female was dominant in this population. For all individuals, von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞ = 36.88 cm, W∞ = 713.01 g, k = 0.248, t0 = -1.278 and b = 3.109. The average condition factor (CF) was 1.48. The lengths at first sexual maturity of female and male chub were 19.2 cm and 15.3 cm respectively. Reproduction period was between the months April to July, egg diameter 1.29 mm and average egg yield were determined to be 25349 unit/individual. The minimum landing size and prohibition season of fishing of chub, which was regulated by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock were compatible with this study.
The Black Sea anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus ponticus) is not only the top commercial species with around 250 thousand tonnes of annual catch but a key species of the Black Sea ecosystem facilitating the flow of energy within the food chain. The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean has assessed the status of its stock for the Mediterranean since 2013. Underlining the shortcomings in the assessments, the commission has recommended diversifying and strengthening the data used and promote methods that provide biomass and abundance indices, such as hydroacoustics. This study aims to help fulfill the underlined deficiency by pursuing the implementation of the hydro-acoustic research surveys in the Turkish Black Sea EEZ. The survey was carried in November/December 2020, when the anchovies were accumulated within the Turkish EEZ, and cruise tracks were designed to cover the distribution areas of juvenile (0-year-old) and adult (Age 1 and over) anchovies displaying different distribution patterns within the Turkish EEZ in winter. The results show that the stock size is noticeably smaller than in previous years. Pelagic trawl sampling conducted alongside the acoustic data collection to estimate the size composition of anchovies indicated that the juvenile fish constitute an alarmingly large part of the overwintering stock.
A new concept "precautionary fisheries management" for the management of fish stocks in Turkey seasWhen the commercial sea fisheries landings are evaluated on species basis according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUİK) data of the year 1990, it has not observed a significant decrease except for slight fluctuations in landing amounts of short-lived fish populations such as anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus), sprats (Sprattus sprattus), sardines (Sardina pilchardus), Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda), and horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus). However, it has observed considerable decline in landing amounts of long-lived benthopelagic fish species as grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), turbot (Psetta maxima), red mullet (Mullus barbatus), whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus), and hake (Merluccius merluccius). These results indicate that these species in second group were overfished and stocks have been destroyed. The concept of "precautionary approach" in fisheries management is more conservator management approach in the event of information on fish stocks is uncertain, unreliable, and insufficient. Worldwide, this mentality has been adopted by Keywords: Fishing quotas many international organizations related to fish stock management in regional seas and there is still application area. Also, implementation of precautionary approach to fisheries management in management of commercial fish stocks in Turkey seas will be able to contribute in terms of protection of over-exploited and long-lived fish stocks, and obtaining maximum sustainable yield (MSY) from these stocks., fisheries management, marine fisheries, ICES.
Mortality Rates and Stock Assessment of Tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758) in Lake Yenicaga (Bolu-Turkey) AbstractThe mortality rates of the 291 tench sampled from the Lake Yenicaga between March 2009 and July 2010 were investigated, by the estimation of stock size, suitable fishing effort, yield and biomass determined to utilize most efficient way. Total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M), and fishing mortality (F) coefficients, stock exploitation (E) and survival (S) rateswere calculated as Z= 0.55 year-1, M= 0.46 year-1, F= 0.09 year-1, E= 0.16 year-1, and S= 57.86%, respectively. During the research period 8344 (4350 kg) tench which were fished from Lake of Yenicaga, was calculated that in one fishing season 130204 (43317 kg) tench were found in the lake. To benefit from this stock most efficiently, by increasing the current fishing effort 203% were determined that 8793 kilos of yield could be obtained.Key words: Bolu, tench, Tinca tinca, mortality rates, stock assessment, Lake Yenicaga.
