The reaction of ZnCl(2) with tert-butylphosphonic acid and 3,5-dimethylpyrazole in the presence of triethylamine as a hydrogen chloride scavenger affords a trinuclear molecular zinc phosphonate [Zn(3)Cl(2)(3,5-Me(2)Pz)(4)(t-BuPO(3))(2)]. The structure of this compound contains a planar trizinc assembly containing two bicapping mu(3) [t-BuPO(3)](2-) ligands and terminal pyrazole and chloride ligands. In contrast an analogous reaction of ZnCl(2) with phenylphosphonic acid and 3,5-dimethylpyrazole affords a hexanuclear zinc phosphonate [Zn(6)Cl(4)(3,5-Me(2)PzH)(8)(PhPO(3))(4)]. The six zinc centers are arranged in a chairlike conformation. The four phosphonates in this complex also act as bridging tripodal mu(3) [RPO(3)](2-) ligands.

A series of three-and four-coordinate iron(II) complexes with nitrogen, chlorine, oxygen, and sulfur ligands is presented. The electronic variation is explored by measuring the association constant of the neutral ligands, and the reduction potential of the iron(II) complexes. Varying the neutral ligand gives large changes in K eq , which decrease in the order CN t Bu > pyridine > 2-picoline > DMF > MeCN > THF > PPh 3 . These differences can be attributed to a mixture of steric effects and electronic effects (both σ and π). The binding constants and the reduction potentials are surprisingly insensitive to changes in an anionic spectator ligand. This suggests that three-coordinate iron(II) complexes may have similar binding trends as proposed three-coordinate iron(II) intermediates in the FeMoco of nitrogenase, even though the anionic spectator ligands in the synthetic complexes differ from the sulfides in the FeMoco.*holland@chem.rochester.edu. The reaction of methylphosphine sulfide, MeP(S)(3,5-Me2Pz)2, 1, with anhydrous CuCl2 affords a tetranuclear copper cluster[Cu2Cl2(3,5-Me2Pz)3(MePO3)]2, 2, and a dinuclear compound Cu2Cl4(3,5-Me2Pz)4, 3. This reaction involves a metal-assisted desulfurization along with concomitant hydrolysis of P-N bonds. The X-ray structures of 1-3 have been determined, and the crystal parameters for these are the following. 1: space group = C2/c, a = 15.2552(1) A, b = 8.7364(2) A, c = 21.4490(3) A, beta = 93.349(1) degrees, V = 2853.74(8) A3, and Z = 8. 2: space group = P2(1)/n, a = 12.5964(4) A, b = 15.7773(4) A, c = 13.9781(4) A, beta = 116.6280(10) degrees, V = 2483.32(12) A3, and Z = 2. 3: space group = P2(1)/c, a = 8.7137(8) A, b = 13.5493(14) A, c = 11.8847(12) A, beta = 106.179(2) degrees, V = 1347.6(2) A3, and Z = 2. The structure of 2 shows that it comprises two dinuclear copper cores bridged together by two tripodal methylphosphinate, MePO3, ligands. 2 is weakly antiferromagnetically coupled, as revealed by variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Reaction of PhP(O)(3,5-Me2Pz)2 or Ph2P(O)(3,5-Me2Pz) with PdCl2(C6H5CN)2 leads to a facile and complete P−N bond hydrolysis; in the former reaction a novel diphosphonic acid anion dimer has been isolated.

The first FeII and NiII complexes with bidentate pyrazolate ligands have been prepared (see scheme; M=FeII, NiII; R=tBu, Me; Ar=2,6‐iPr2C6H3; X=Cl, (μ‐Cl)2Li(thf)2). The coordination mode of the pyrazolate ligand η2 or μ‐(η1:η1) and the geometry of the resulting complex depends on the steric bulk of the diketiminate ligand, the d‐electron configuration of the metal center, the solvent, and the relative stabilities of the σ‐ and π‐type frontier orbitals.

Eleven self-complementary G/\C derivatives bearing hydrophobic moieties were synthesized and characterized. One representative derivative from this family was shown to self-assemble into rosette nanotubes in hexane and form Langmuir-Blodgett films at the air-water interface.
