Las serpientes son vertebrados ápodos cubiertos de escamas epidérmicas, denominados animales ectotermos ya que su temperatura interna depende de la temperatura medio ambiental. Su tamaño varía de acuerdo a la familia a la cual pertenezcan, existiendo desde muy pequeñas (10 a 15 cm), hasta mayores a los dos metros de longitud. son carnívoras y, dependiendo de la especie y del tamaño, se alimentan de diversos animales como insectos, peces, ratones, ranas pequeñas, lagartijas, aves y murciélagos, e incluso otras serpientes (SALDARRIAGA, 1998; MURILLO-MORENO et al., 2006).
