People who reside in regions where leishmaniasis is endemic and who lack proteins, iron, zinc, and vitamin A in their diet are more prone to develop visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a full-blown disease. Vitamin A deficiency favors the development of a parasitic infection in the human host, and the WHO recommends administering 200,000-IU doses to VL patients on admission.
