Background Suicide is a health problem in developing countries like Indonesia, especially in East Java Province. Some reports suggest that there is a link between suicide and climatic conditions. This implies evidence that climatic conditions tend to influence suicide rates. So far, little is known about the correlation between suicide and climatic conditions, especially in Indonesia, which has two seasons. Methods The research aims to determine the relationship between rainfall, air temperature, air humidity, and wind speed on the incidence of suicides in East Java Province. This study uses a time trend ecological study design where the unit of analysis is months and years for four years. Univariate analysis using the normality test, bivariate analysis using the Pearson correlation test. Data analysis using secondary data. Climate data uses data from the Central Statistics Agency for East Java Province, while data on suicide cases uses data from the General Hospital of Doctor Soetomo Surabaya and the Bhayangkara Hospital. Results There was a relationship between rainfall and suicide cases per month (p = 0.000) and a strong relationship (r = 0.846) with a positive pattern. There is a relationship between air humidity and suicide cases per month (p = 0.028) and a strong relationship (r = 0.634) with a positive pattern. Monthly air temperature, monthly wind speed, annual rainfall, annual air temperature, yearly air humidity, and annual wind speed are unrelated to suicide cases. Conclusions It is concluded that monthly precipitation and monthly air humidity are associated with monthly suicide cases. It needs the cooperation of the East Java Provincial Health Office, related agencies, and the community in utilizing climate data to prevent suicide cases in the future.
BACKGROUND: Drowning is one type of asphyxia caused by the entry of fluid into the airway. Death due to drowning is one of the hardest things that are difficult to diagnose in the field of forensic medicine, primarily if the victim found to be in a decomposed state. The state of decomposed examination often does not show typical signs. The diagnosis of drowning can be reached after considering all the results of the forensic examination including external, internal, and laboratory examinations. CASE PRESENTATION: A body has been found in the residential area on the east side of the beach, Tambaksarioso Village, Asemrowo District, on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at 13.30 West Indonesian Time and reported to the police for investigation. The body was then identified at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital by a forensic expert. External, internal, and laboratory investigations were conducted. On external examination, the corpse was not intact, with signs of decay, saponification, and violation. In an internal examination, sand in the airways and other signs of drowning were identified. In the acid destruction test using the right femur, a positive diatom result was obtained. CONCLUSION: A complete autopsy is vital to determine the cause and mechanism of death, reconstruct the events before death, and identify the victim. It is also essential to determine whether the deceased died by drowning was alive before entering the water. All injuries suffered by the victims should be described.
Background: A traffic accident is an unexpected and unintentional event involving a vehicle with or without other road users which causes human victims to suffer minor injuries, moderate injuries, and serious injuries.Case Presentation: A letter has been received for a request for Visum et Repertum (VeR) Luka from the Surabaya Police with a statement that the person is suspected to have suffered traffic accident injuries on Jalan Raya Medokan Sawah on September 21, 2021 at 10.00 WIB. General examination, wounds and support were carried out. The results of the examination and the conclusion of the degree of injury are then written into a VeR.Conclusion: VeR serves as legal evidence, as evidence for the detention of suspects, and as material for judge's consideration. The application of the degree of injury in the writing of the conclusion of the VeR does not mention the degree of injury, but the impact is stated as formulated in the criminal provisions in the Criminal Code or other laws.
Background: Railway-related accidents can cause severe injuries, and, most of the time, death. In a country with frequent railway-related accidents, a complete autopsy is vital to determine the cause and mechanism of death, reconstruct the events before death, and identify the victim. It is also essential to determine whether the deceased died by suicide or homicide. This article reports an autopsy of a non-identified victim from a train crash with two fatal injuries. In addition, we reported the challenges in establishing the cause and manner of death. Case presentation: A man was hit by a Pertamina train on Tuesday, 19 July 2022, at 00:24 West Indonesian Time (UTC+07:00), and this was reported to the police for investigation. The body was then examined at Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital by a forensic expert. The external examination suggested the presence of abrasions on the face, waist, and all four limbs, lacerations on the face and right earlobe, and open head fractures. In an internal examination, skull-base fractures, fourth and sixth right rib fractures, bleeding in the chest cavity, shrinking lungs, lacerations to the liver and lower right and left lungs, and blood infiltration in the chest cavity wall muscles and scalp muscles were found. The pneumothorax test was positive on the left chest but negative for heart air embolism. Investigation of the base of the skull revealed the presence of fractures. Conclusions: Determining the cause of death in a patient with multiple injuries was challenging and required a thorough investigation. Pneumothorax and air embolism could be the primary cause of death and their presence had to be investigated. Fractures of the base of the skull were established as the cause of death. According to the investigations at the crime scene and the injury profile, suicide was concluded as the manner of death.
