We provide a simple low energy description of recombination of intersecting D-branes using super Yang-Mills theory. The recombination is realized by condensation of an off-diagonal tachyonic fluctuation localized at the intersecting point. The recombination process is equivalent to brane-antibrane annihilation, thus our result confirms Sen's conjecture on tachyon condensation, although we work in the super Yang-Mills theory whose energy scale is much lower than α ′ . We also discuss the decay width of non-parallelly separated D-branes.
This experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of casein, soy protein, soy protein with bound phospholipids (SP), soy protein peptic hydrolysate (SPH) or soy protein peptic hydrolysate with bound phospholipids (SPHP) on the micellar solubility of cholesterol and the taurocholate binding capacity in vitro. We also evaluated the effects of various proteins on cholesterol metabolism in rats and Caco-2 cells. SPHP had a significantly greater bile acid-binding capacity than that of SPH in vitro. Micellar cholesterol solubility in vitro was significantly lower in the presence of SPHP compared to casein tryptic hydrolysate (CTH). The cholesterol micelles containing SPHP and SPH significantly suppressed cholesterol uptake by Caco-2 cells compared to the cholesterol micelles containing CTH. Consistent with these findings in the in vivo cholesterol absorption study using radioisotopes, fecal excretion of total steroids was significantly greater in rats fed the SPHP diet compared with those fed the casein, soy protein, SP and SPH diets. Serum total cholesterol was significantly lower in rats fed SPHP than in those fed casein. The concentrations of total lipids and cholesterol in liver were significantly lower in the SPHP-fed group compared with all other groups. These results suggest that the suppression of cholesterol absorption by direct interaction between cholesterol-mixed micelles and SPHP in the jejunal epithelia is part of the mechanism underlying the hypocholesterolemic action of SPHP. SPHP may also inhibit the reabsorption of bile acids in the ileum, thus lowering the serum cholesterol level.
This study was designed to clarify the mechanisms of the hypocholesterolemic action of Spirulina platensis concentrate (SPC) and identify the novel hypocholesterolemic protein derived from SPC. We investigated the effects of casein or SPC on the solubility of cholesterol, taurocholate binding capacity in vitro, cholesterol absorption in Caco-2 cells, and cholesterol metabolism in rats for 10 d. We also evaluated the effects of SPC, C-phycocyanin (PHY), and PHY residue on cholesterol metabolism in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet for 5 d, and SPC or SPC-acetone extract for 10 d. SPC had a significantly greater bile acid-binding capacity than casein in vitro. Micellar cholesterol solubility and cholesterol uptake by Caco-2 cells was significantly lower in the presence of SPC compared with casein. Fecal excretion of cholesterol and bile acids was significantly greater in rats fed the SPC-supplemented diet than in those fed the casein control diet. Serum and liver cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower in rats fed SPC than in those fed casein. Thus, the hypocholesterolemic action of SPC may involve the inhibition of both jejunal cholesterol absorption and ileal bile acid reabsorption. Although no studies to date have found a hypocholesterolemic protein among the algal proteins, we report here the discovery of a hypocholesterolemic effect in the novel protein C-phycocyanin. This study provides the first direct evidence that PHY, a novel hypocholesterolemic protein derived from Spirulina platensis, can powerfully influence serum cholesterol concentrations and impart a stronger hypocholesterolemic activity than SPC in animals.
We examine Sen's descent relations among ͑non-͒ Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield ͑BPS͒ D-branes by using low-energy effective field theories of the DpD p system. We find that the fluctuation around the kink solution reproduces the low-energy matter content on a non-BPS D(pϪ1)-brane. The effective action for these fluctuation modes turns out to be a generalization of the Minahan-Zwiebach model. In addition, it is shown that the fluctuations around the vortex solution consist of massless fields on a BPS D(pϪ2)-brane and they are subject to the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. We find the universality that the above results do not refer to particular forms of the effective action.
