Daily power-assisted FES home program therapy can effectively improve wrist and finger extension and shoulder flexion. Proprioceptional sensory feedback might play an important role in power-assisted FES therapy.
The hybrid therapy was effective for patients with chronic spastic hemiparesis. Proprioceptional sensory feedback may have an important role in power-assisted functional electrical stimulation therapy.
This study aimed to measure the influence of wearing face masks on individuals' physical status in a hot and humid environment. Methods: Each participant experienced different physical situations: (i) not wearing a mask (control), (ii) wearing a surgical mask, (iii) wearing a sport mask. An ingestible capsule thermometer was used to measure internal core body temperature during different exercises (standing, walking, and running, each for 20 min) in an artificial weather room with the internal wet-bulb globe temperature set at 28°C. The change in the participants' physical status and urinary liver fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) were measured. Results: Six healthy male volunteers were enrolled in the study. In each participant, significant changes were observed in the heart rate and internal core temperatures after increased exercise intensity; however, no significant differences were observed between these parameters and urinary L-FABP among the three intervention groups.
Conclusion:Mask wearing is not a risk factor for heatstroke during increased exercise intensity.
Background: Trauma is a serious medical and economic problem worldwide, and patients with trauma injuries have a poor survival rate following cardiac arrest. This study aimed to create a prediction model specific to prehospital trauma care and to achieve greater accuracy with techniques of machine learning. Methods: This retrospective observational study investigated data of patients who had blunt trauma injuries due to traffic accident and fall trauma from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2019, using the National Emergency Medical Services Information System, which stores emergency medical service activity records nationwide in the United States. Random forest was used to develop a machine learning model.
Results:Per the prediction model, the area under the curve of the predictive model was 0.95 and negative predictive value was 0.99. The feature importance of the predictive model was the highest for the AVPU scale (an acronym from "Alert, Verbal, Pain, Unresponsive"), followed by oxygen saturation (SpO2). Among patients who were progressing to cardiac arrest, the cutoff value was 89% for SpO2 in unalert patients. Conclusions: Patients whose conditions did not progress to cardiac arrest could be identified with high accuracy by machine learning model techniques.
We experienced a case of 61 years old woman who showed delay of functional recovery after onset of CVA, which could be considered to be caused by side effect of carcinostatic. She had had gastric cancer at the age of 58, and then gastrotomy had been done. After operation she was taking dose of carcinostatic; tegafur-uracil. When she was 61 years old, she was attacked by CVA and noticed severe left hemiplegia. Two months after the onset of this CVA attack, she admitted to our hospital for rehabilitation. Six months after the onset, her upper and lower extremities had no voluntary movement with flaccid muscle tones, and she could not walk. Then we suspected that this abnormal course were due to side effect of carcinostatic, and we decided to stop using it. One month after the stoppage, voluntary movement in the affected side was appeared, after four months she became to be able to walk by herself with ankle foot orthosis and quad cane. We presumed that the mechanism of this abnormal course was caused by neurotoxic action, antimetabolic mechanism worked to damaged area, undernourishment secondary influenced, or the natural course started by accidentally.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
