A phase transformation occurs in nickel-based single-crystal superalloys as a result of the oxidation that creates the external NiO scale. This transformation, which is the precursor to internal oxidation, creates the β phase (NiAl) fi rst followed by the δ phase (Ni 2 Al 3 ) prior to the formation of the spinel Ni (Cr,Al) 2 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 in succession. The implications of this effect on the rate of oxidation are discussed in this article.
