Penelitan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh nilai total moisture terhadap gross calorivic value pada batubara jenis X yang berasal dari PT Bukit Asam Unit Pelabuhan Tarahan. Kualitas suatu batubara dapat ditentukan dengan cara analisa secara fisik maupun kimia. Umumnya untuk menentukan kualitas batubara dilakukan analisa kimia pada batubara yang diantaranya berupa analisis proksimat dan analisis ultimat. Metode yang digunakan untuk menentukan total moisture yaitu dengan metode gravimetri dan penentuan nilai kalori dengan menggunakan alat bomb calorimeter dengan prinsip kerja asaz black. Hasil nilai total moisture yang didapat 17,53%, 20,79%, 17,92%, 21,07%, 10,73%, 19,43%, 20,07%, 21,76%, 22,79%, 32,12%. Dan nilai gross calorivic value basis adb yaitu 6836 cal/g, 6511 cal/g, 6738 cal/g, 6456 cal/g, 7075 cal/g, 6706 cal/g, 6685 cal/g, 6688 cal/g, 6535 cal/g, 6484 cal/g. Hasil total moisture yang diuji didapatkan berada pada rentang 10.43% - 32.12%, dengan rata - rata 20.42%. Nilai gross calorific value (GCV) didapatkan berada pada rentang 6456 – 7075 kal/g yang di mana kalori pada rentang tersebut masuk ke dalam klasifikasi bituminous. Hasil total moisture tersebut disimpulkan berada di atas standar yang diterapkan perusahaan yaitu sebesar 11%. Hubungan antara Total Moisture dan Gross Calorivic Value berbanding terbalik. Karena semakin tinggi Moisture pada suatu batubara maka nilai kalori yang dihasilkan akan rendah.
