We point to a popular yet underresearched platform of political information, the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Considering the supply side of the marketplace, we argue that personal biographies on the platform are an attractive medium for politicians to enhance their appearance. We trace changes to biographies coming from the parliament using data that cover the entire edit histories for biographies on all German members of parliament for the three last legislative periods. Our findings show editing of personal biographies to be a persistent phenomenon. Moreover, type, timing, and driving factors of editing behavior highlight the importance politicians' attribute to Wikipedia for pursuing reelection. Our results speak to the domains of political professionalization, voting behavior, and the general measurement of communicative patterns.
Background Poor bone stock in patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head may be a reason for poor outcome after hip replacement. One way of studying bone quality is to measure implant migration. We thus investigated the clinical and radiographic results of cementless THR in younger patients with femoral head osteonecrosis.Patients and methods We studied hips in 41 patients (mean age 48 (25-63) years) with a cementless hip arthroplasty after late stage osteonecrosis. Clinical evaluation was by the Harris hip score, the WOMAC score and the SF-36 score. Stem subsidence was measured with the Ein Bild Roentgen Analyse femoral component analysis (EBRA-FCA) at 3, 12, 24, 60, and 72 months after operation. The average duration of follow-up was 7(1-9) years, with less than 2 years for 2 patients. Results There was no revision of any hip. No radiographic or clinical stem loosening was seen. After 60 months, the cementless stems showed a median subsidence of -0.7 mm (95% CI: -0.9 to -0.2). No femoral osteolysis occurred. Femoral radiolucent lines, all < 1 mm, were seen in 10 hips. At the latest follow-up the Harris hip score was 83 (23-100) points.Interpretation Our findings for porous-coated stems in patients with femoral osteonecrosis indicate no greater risk of stem subsidence and rate of osteolysis after an average of 7 years follow-up. Thus, we continue to use uncemented stems in younger patients with femoral osteonecrosis. However, continued follow-up will be necessary to evaluate the long-term outcome.
Knowledge about political representatives' behavior is crucial for a deeper understanding of politics and policy-making processes. Yet resources on legislative elites are scattered, often specialized, limited in scope or not always accessible. This article introduces the Comparative Legislators Database (CLD), which joins micro-data collection efforts on open-collaboration platforms and other sources, and integrates with renowned political science datasets. The CLD includes political, sociodemographic, career, online presence, public attention, and visual information for over 45,000 contemporary and historical politicians from ten countries. The authors provide a straightforward and open-source interface to the database through an R package, offering targeted, fast and analysis-ready access in formats familiar to social scientists and standardized across time and space. The data is verified against human-coded datasets, and its use for investigating legislator prominence and turnover is illustrated. The CLD contributes to a central hub for versatile information about legislators and their behavior, supporting individual-level comparative research over long periods.

We present a polling strategy to predict and analyze runoff elections using the 2017 French presidential race as an empirical case. This strategy employs rejective probability sampling to identify a small sample of polling stations that is balanced with respect to past election results. We then survey the voters’ candidate evaluations in first-round exit polls. We poststratify the voter sample to first-round election returns to account for nonresponse and coverage issues, and impute missing candidate evaluations to emulate campaign learning. Next, the votes for eliminated competitors are redistributed according to their supporters’ lower-order preferences. Finally, the predictions are validated against official results and other polls. We end with a discussion of the advantages and limitations of this approach.
