Mental health is an integral part of overall health status but has been a largely neglected issue in the developing world especially among female sex workers (FSWs). This study examines the prevalence and correlates of major depression among FSWs in southern India. Major depression was assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-2 depression scale data from a cross-sectional Behavioral Tracking Survey, 2010-2011 conducted among FSWs (n = 1986) in Andhra Pradesh, a state in southern India. Almost two-fifths of FSWs (39%) reported major depression. Multivariate logistic regression analysis shows a significant association between major depression and the following characteristics for FSWs: low autonomy, alcohol use, experience of violence, police arrest, inconsistent condom use with clients, mobility for sex work, and being HIV positive or not wanting to disclose HIV status. Research and advocacy efforts are needed to ensure that the mental health issues of marginalized groups are appropriately addressed in HIV prevention programs.
CONTEXT: Adolescents constitute a large and growing proportion of many Asian populations; thus, their knowledge and use of contraceptives have major implications for both public health and population growth. METHODS:Data from Demographic and Health Surveys, other national surveys and studies conducted during the last decade are used to examine the contraceptive behaviors of Asian adolescents. The analysis includes Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in South Asia, as well as Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam in Southeast Asia. RESULTS:Although awareness of contraception is almost universal among married adolescents, knowledge of specific methods and sources of supplies is limited. Use of modern methods varies considerably among countries, from 2% of adolescents in Pakistan to 44% in Indonesia. In general, however, contraceptive prevalence is lower in South Asia than in Southeast Asia. Although there has been a substantial increase in contraceptive use among adolescents, unmet need remains high, ranging from 9% in Indonesia to 41% in Nepal. The vast majority of unmarried, sexually active adolescents either do not use any contraceptives or use traditional methods. CONCLUSIONS: Asian adolescents need accurate information about sexuality, reproduction and contraception as well as user-friendly reproductive health services. Intervention research is needed to identify appropriate strategies to address these needs.International Family Planning Perspectives,
There are many challenges in evaluating international networks. The use of conventional tools can be difficult and often provides less than useful information. Social Network Analysis offers benefits for network evaluators by allowing for documentation and analysis of inter-relationships between individuals and organisations. This paper describes the use of this approach in the evaluation of a major international project entitled the Global Dialogues on Sexual Health and Well-being. It highlights the value of maps in enabling clear visual representations of networks, the identification of areas needing greater focus and the basis on which networks are constructed.
In a study of techniques for first trimester abortion conducted at Kandang Kerbau Hospital in Singapore from September 1973 to April 1975, 420 physically healthy gravidas were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups either by D & C or vacuum aspiration. Half of the patients in each group were 6 to 10 menstrual weeks' gestation and half were 11 to 12 week's gestation. The numbers of women with one or more complications were the same for the two treatment groups, but were significantly less when termination was carried out at 11 to 12 weeks' gestation. Estimated blood loss was significantly lower for patients treated by VA (32.3 ml) than for patients treated by D & C (39.0 ml) at 6 to 10 week's gestation, but the difference in blood loss was not statistically significant at 11 to 12 weeks' gestation. Time from insertion to removal of the speculum was significantly less with VA than D & C at 6 to 10 weeks' gestation but not at 11 to 12 weeks' gestation. Since vacuum aspiration is at least as safe as D & C, and appears to be more convenient and costeffective, it should on the basis of this experience be accepted over D & C as the standard method for treatment of first trimester abortion.
