Documentar la presencia de especies de aves fuera de su lugar de distribución permite entender los patrones de distribución espacial y temporal de las aves, además de reflejar el valor ecológico con respecto a otros sitios. Los registros que presentamos aquí incluyen observaciones de 2009 a 2018 en la costa de Jalisco y Colima. Durante este periodo hicimos visitas mensuales o estacionales a los humedales costeros e islas cercanas a la costa con el fin de realizar un inventario y estimar las poblaciones de aves acuáticas. Como resultado de este estudio reportamos la presencia de ocho especies fuera de su área de distribución, entre las que se encuentra el ganso de Ross (Anser rossii), mérgulo de Craveri (Synthliboramphus craveri), alcuela oscura (Ptychoramphus aleuticus), paíño de Leach (Oceanodroma leucorhoa) y el petrel de Juan Fernández (Pterodroma externa). Además, realizamos el primer registro de anidación de la gaviota ploma (Larus heermanni), garza morena (Ardea herodias) y gavilán caracolero (Rostrhamus sociabilis). Cinco de las especies que observamos se encuentran en alguna categoría de protección en México, y otras cinco en la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza. En el caso de algunas especies como la alcuela oscura, el petrel de Juan Fernández y el paíño de Leach, su presencia la asociamos con el paso de las tormentas tropicales Linda (2009), Juliette (2013) y Marty (2009), respectivamente, que afectaron la costa del Pacífico central mexicano. Al haber registrado la anidación de la gaviota ploma incrementamos 90 km más al sur su área de reproducción reportada, además es el primer reporte en Peña Blanca, Colima. La garza morena la registramos durante los tres años en que se visitó la isla Pajarera, en la bahía de Chamela, Jalisco: 2015, tres nidos; 2016, seis nidos, y 2017, cuatro nidos. En el caso del gavilán caracolero solamente observamos dos nidos en la laguna El Tule, Jalisco: uno en 2016 y otro en 2017. Con nuestros registros creció el listado de especies de aves acuáticas y documentamos nuevos sitios de anidación en la costa de Jalisco y Colima.
Introducción: México concentra alrededor del 11 % de las especies de aves del mundo, de las cuales el 20 % son endémicas del país, concentrándose el mayor número en la región occidental. Objetivo: Analizar la composición, diversidad y distribución de la avifauna a lo largo de un gradiente altitudinal en el occidente de México. Métodos: La investigación se realizó en la Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra de Manantlán. Registramos especies de aves vistas o escuchadas en 28 puntos de conteo fijos a lo largo de un gradiente de elevación de 1 000 m. La comparación de la riqueza y la completitud del muestreo se determinaron con curvas de interpolación y extrapolación. Las franjas se compararon con un Procedimiento no Paramétrico de Permutación Multirespuesta. Se usaron correlaciones y ordenaciones indirectas para analizar cambios en la riqueza y abundancia. Resultados: Registramos 129 especies (estimado: 96 % de completitud): 19 endémicas de México, 13 en alguna categoría de riesgo y 21 consideradas indicadoras. La elevación determinó la distribución y abundancia de las especies, y las franjas altitudinales más bajas, tuvieron los valores más altos de riqueza y abundancia. Conclusión: La mayor riqueza y abundancia de especies se registró a menor altitud, con un cambio significativo en la composición y tipo de especies indicadoras por franja.
Este estud io descri be la abundancia estacional, fenología reproductiva y fi delidad al sitio de Melanotis caerulescens, especie de ave endémica de México, localmente conocida como mulato y valorada por su canto. Se realizó un muestreo con el método de captura con redes de niebla durante 2 años en 3 sitios de la vegetación ribereña del río Ayuquila, Jalisco. Se caracterizó el hábitat mediante muestreos de los estratos arbóreo, arbustivo y herbáceo. Mediante modelos lineales generalizados se analizaron las diferencias de cobertura de los estratos entre los sitios y se identifi có el efecto del sitio y el mes sobre la abundancia de la especie. La presencia de parche de incubación y protuberancia cloacal describe un periodo reproductor de abril a agosto. La abundancia del mulato se relacionó positivamente con sitios de mayor cobertura arbustiva y el análisis de fi delidad (por presencia-ausencia de 16 individuos) mostró que 3 parejas reproductoras mantuvieron sus territorios. Estos resultados sugieren que mantener una adecuada densidad de sotobosque arbustivo en zonas ribereñas es importante para proveer alimento y áreas para la nidifi cación que requiere el mulato. El presente estudio es relevante por tratarse de los primeros datos al respecto que se publican sobre esta especie endémica.
