Leadership Styles of University Professors: A Case Study at a Public Education Institution RESUMOA presente pesquisa objetivou identificar os estilos de liderança dos professores de uma instituição de ensino superior, localizada na cidade de Patos, na Paraíba. Para este estudo utilizou-se a abordagem quantitativa a partir do método dedutivo. A coleta dos dados ocorreu por meio do questionário Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire -5x (MLQ), proposto por Bass (1985), e a análise a partir de estatística descritiva. Foram entrevistados 30 professores de uma amostra total de 58, distribuídos em quatro cursos. Verificou-se que todos os estilos de liderança estudados são adotados pelos professores. No entanto, há um predomínio dos estilos transformacional (M= 4,15) e transacional (M=3,84), os quais apresentaram variação conforme a situação específica. Resultados demonstraram o interesse dos docentes em questões de liderança, no intuito de obter o melhor ambiente de trabalho e a máxima eficiência e eficácia dos seus alunos.Palavras-Chave: liderança; ensino superior; professores. ABSTRACTThis research aimed to identify the leadership styles of the professors of a higher education institution located in the city of Patos, Paraíba, Brazil. We adopted a quantitative approach from the deductive method. The data were collected through the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire -5x (MLQ) questionnaire, proposed by Bass (1985), and the analysis based on descriptive statistics. Thirty professors from a total sample of 58 were interviewed in four programs. It was verified that all the styles of leadership studied are observed in professor's behaviour however, there is, a predominance of transformational (M = 4.15) and transactional styles (M = 3.84), which varied according to the specific situation. Therefore, the results showed the professors' interest in leadership issues in order to obtain the best working environment and maximum efficiency and effectiveness of their students.
