Introduction: Approximately (24.8%) the world's population suffers from anemia and 50% of an anemic case is due to iron deficiency. This study investigated the efficacy of Moringa oleifera L leaves to extract as an iron booster and supplement to help overcome anemia in the community. Methods: It was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in anemic women (hemoglobin 8-12g/dL), in which the water extract of moringa leaves was examined as an add-on therapy in the subject treated with ferrous sulfate (200mg/ tablet). Thirty-five women subject of 16-49 years old were divided into 17 of moringa leaves and 18 of control. The extract of moringa leaves of 1400 mg was formulated in capsules and was administrated daily for 3 weeks. Results: The result showed there were significantly increase of mean of hemoglobin (0.794±0.81 g/dL), ferritin (29.378±42.48 ng/mL), MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration) (2.459±2.86 g/dL), RDW (Red Distribution Wide) (1.4±2.07 %) and decreased of platelets (36529.41±59024.48 /uL). The control groups were significantly increased of mean of the hemoglobin (0.644± 0.83g/dL), erythrocytes (0.475±0.523 Tpt/L), hematocrit (2.189±l4.08 %), MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume)( 4.756±8.91 fL), MCH (2.183±2.47 pg) dan RDW
Background: The leaves of Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lamk.) have been empirically used as anti-anemia for pregnant woman. Objectives: In the present study, the effect of ethanolic extract of moringa leaves was evaluated on the hematology parameters (hemoglobin, red blood cell count, hematocrit), on aniline induced white female rats. Materials and Methods: Thirty female rats strain Sprague-Dawley were divided into six groups: normal, anemia and ferrous fumarate group, and three groups of Moringa leaves extract. All groups, except normal group, induced by aniline at dose 0.005 ml/ g bw intraperitonially. On fifth day, normal and anemia groups were given 0.5% CMC, ferrous fumarate group was given ferrous fumarate orally and three other groups were given Moringa leaves extract at doses 198 mg, 396 mg, and 792 mg/200 g bw until the eleventh day.
Results:The results showed that as Moringa leaves extracts increased the level of hemoglobin, red blood cell count, hematocrit, and total iron content in blood. Moreover, Moringa leaves extract at dose 792 mg/200 g bw can
Objectives: Pectin, a natural polysaccharide, can be used as colon targeted drug delivery systems. Ionotropic gelation of pectin in the presence of certain divalent cations, such as calcium ions, protects drugs by producing insoluble hydrogels that can be used as a colon-targeted drug delivery carrier. In this study, calcium pectinate beads containing tetrandrine were made and were evaluated for in-vitro drug release and in-vivo study.Methods: Calcium pectinate beads were prepared by ionic gelation method with varied calcium chloride concentration (5%, 10%, and 15%). The best formula was coated with pH sensitive polymers, i.e., Eudragit L100-55, Eudragit L100, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate HP-55 or cellulose acetate phthalate.
Results:Characterization results showed that the beads produced were quite spherical and had yellow-brownish color. After the coating process, beads were used in in-vitro drug release and targeted test. From in-vitro release study, beads coated with Eudragit L100 10% has shown good colon targeted dosage form with percent cumulative release 57.87%. This result also confirmed with the in-vivo test. Beads which were coated by Eudragit L100 10% could be found in the rat intestine.Conclusion: Formula 1 (5% calcium chloride concentration) was chosen as the best beads characterization. Formula 1C (5% beads coated with 10% Eudragit L100) showed an optimal protection from gastric acid in the in-vitro release study and able to deliver the beads to the intestine in the in-vivo targeted test.
