In this paper, the authors provide an overview of schools’ outdoor spaces. A brief analysis of their historical development is followed by a study of contemporary multifunctional use of school grounds primarily based on an interaction between the community and public urban spaces. Schools’ outdoor spaces have lately been comprehensively researched in light of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on teaching as well as the long-standing awareness of the importance of eco-friendly living. Architectural elements of schoolyards of the early twentieth-century Open Air Schools, created to improve children’s health, and the ensuing process of evolving school outdoor spaces beyond education, are detailed with a vision of connecting schools with the surrounding built environment. Through a comparative analysis of selected case studies in Croatia, the paper presents three examples of interaction between primary school outdoor spaces and urban public spaces. This interaction is a viable future trend in school design and urban planning in view of the reduction of accessible community areas with the aim of bring education back to its origins in nature and urban public spaces. This article focuses on the history of Osijek's spatial and urban planning with respect to the position and treatment of the city's railway system. The study compared eight plans, dating from 1912 to the present day, and found that railway construction in and around the city was completed in 1910. During this period, three different planning approaches were developed for the city's railway system. The oldest planning approach, starting in 1912, was a passive, "leave it as it is" approach, dealing cautiously with the network of newly constructed railway lines. The second, proactive approach, proposed dismantling or relocating railway lines from the city center while the third approach focused on the actual railway traffic in Osijek with respect to public use of vacant railway corridors. The results will help provide a scientific basis for future planning of railways and railway corridors in the urban area of Osijek.
The universities of the 21st century are dedicated to three missions - education, science and advancement of the community. The impact of two major earthquakes in Croatia in 2020 as well as the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic, led to the integration of these topics into the educational process at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture Osijek (GRAFOS), Croatia. In this example, GRAFOS architecture students designed shelters for people left homeless following natural disasters. The paper presents the process of creating innovative and bold shelter proposals, simultaneously developing students' skills like critical thinking, team work, communication and interpersonal skills.
