Tornadoes are one of the most prevalent natural hazards in the United States, yet they have been underrepresented in the disaster mental health comprehensive literature. In the current study, we systematically reviewed available scientific evidence within published research journals on tornadoes and mental health from 1994 to 2021. The electronic search strategy identified 384 potentially relevant articles. Of the 384 articles, 29 articles met the inclusion criteria, representing 27,534 participants. Four broad areas were identified: (i) Mental health impacts of tornadoes; (ii) Risk factors; (iii) Protective factors; and (iv) Mental health interventions. Overall, results showed adverse mental health symptoms (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety) in both adult and pediatric populations. A number of risk factors were found to contribute to negative mental health, including demographics, tornado exposure, post-tornado stressors, and prior exposure to trauma. Protective factors found to contribute to positive outcomes included having access to physical, social, and psychological resources. Together, these findings can serve as an important resource for future mental health services in communities experiencing tornadoes.
Extreme heat is a climate, public health, and environmental justice issue. This case study examined public transit exposure and vulnerability to extreme heat by investigating the microenvironment, land cover characteristics, and social vulnerability of heat-vulnerable bus stops in Knoxville, Tennessee. The community’s temperature and Heat Index information, bus stop point data, land cover characteristics data, and the microenvironment of bus stops (i.e., trees and shelters) were processed and mapped with ArcGIS Pro. The pictures of the microenvironment of the bus stop were collected from Google Maps, and the social vulnerability of the area where the bus stops are located was investigated by analyzing the Center for Disease and Prevention's Social Vulnerability Index. Results found that the most heat-vulnerable bus stops were concentrated in West Knoxville, South, North, Northeast, and Northwest Knoxville. In addition, the most heat-vulnerable bus stops were concentrated in commercial complexes and areas a large number of systematically marginalized populations reside.
The urban heat island is a climate, public health, and environmental justice issue. Sustainable urban infrastructure needs improvements in public transport to protect citizens’ health from the urban heat island. This case study investigates the local microenvironment and social vulnerability of heat-vulnerable bus stops in Knoxville, Tennessee, using publicly available data from a variety of sources. These included ground and satellite measurements of heat and humidity from the Knoxville Heat Mapping Campaign, characteristics of land surface from the National Land Cover Dataset 2019 of the United States Geological Survey, and the 2018 Social Vulnerability Index from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A geographic information system and a principal component analysis were used to identify social vulnerability in areas where the bus stops are located. The results show that most heat-vulnerable bus stops are poor microenvironments without trees and shelters. The hottest bus stops are concentrated in the highly developed and densely populated areas of West Knoxville and downtown Knoxville and in South, North, Northeast, and Northwest Knoxville, which are relatively high vulnerability clustered and have poor public infrastructure. The findings provide the foundation for mitigation strategies to better prepare local communities for climate change by identifying public transportation areas negatively impacted by the urban heat island.
