PHYSICAL MODELING OF VORTEX FORMATION DURING LADLE DRAINAGE AbstractA 1:7 scale plexiglas model of a steelmaking ladle (315 tons, ArcelorMittalTubarão) was built in order to assess the conditions of vortex formation during the final stages of draining. The vortex was detected by a photo-electric sensor and the mass of residual liquid inside the ladle was evaluated after weighing. The influence of the type of residual flow, as dictated by routes of processing such as: RH degasser, IRUT reactor, as well as the drainage flow rate, in addition to anti-vortex devices, was assessed Residual flow due to RH or IRUT processing as well as the initial level of liquid did not affect the results. The mass of residual liquid at vortex onset was influenced by the flow rate only. At the final stages of drainage, the liquid surface collapse was dictated by the bottom ladle capacity of supplying liquid in the radial direction to the outlet. As a consequence vortex breakers were found deleterious under these set of conditions. A rotational flow was induced in order to increase the likelyhood of vortex formation. In this case gas injection through the pouring nozzle, vortex breakers, slopped bottoms have been found effective. Key words: Continuous casting; Ladle; Simulation; Vortex.
DEVELOPMENT OF FLUORINE-FREE MOULD FLUX APPLIED IN LOW CARBON STEEL AbstractThe mould flux is a mixture of non-metallic oxides that, in contact with liquid steel melts, becomes a liquid slag which the mainly function is to lubricate and control heat transfer between mould and strand during the continuous casting process. The mould flux without fluoride has the advantage of decreasing the wear of machine and the SEN in comparison to common mould flux. The application in Continuous Casting of Slabs has been a great challenge in relation to the operational viability together with internal and surface quality of slabs. Another differential is the decrease of environmental issues on account of the contamination of secondary cooling water by the fluorides. It is considered that properties of mould flux as chemical composition, viscosity, softening, melting flowing temperatures, fusion rate, etc, should be suitable to the chemical composition and the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures of steel and also the operational parameters such as casting temperature, casting speed, mould frequency, among others. This work presents a preliminary analysis in relation to operational viability, analysis of surface quality of slabs, measurements of fluorides content in the water of secondary cooling of machine. In addition to that, the analyses of operational features as measurements of wear of SEN, mould flux consumptio...
DEVELOPMENT OF FLOATING STOPPER IN THE TUNDISH OF CONTINUOUS CASTING MACHINES AT ARCELORMITTAL TUBARÃO Abstract In continuous casting of slabs, steel flow from tundish to mold is usually controlled by stopper rod system or slide gate nozzle. When the flow control is performed via stopper rod, a minimum amount of steel is required to start filling the mold. This volume of steel is important to avoid starting cast freezing, as well as to promote flotation of impurities come with the first stream of steel, or rest in the tundish floor. However, when the steel flow is controlled via the slide gate nozzle, it is necessary to use devices like metallic stoppers in the form of plugs, which have limited efficiency. Aiming to improve the starting performance of continuous casting machines that use steel flow control tundish-mold via the slide gate nozzle, it was developed the so-called floating ceramic fiber stopper, whose main functions are to equalize the level of steel to provide a normal cast starting and prevent impurities which are entrained by the first stream of steel. Initially used for billets, it was developed and deployed in the continuous casting slabs at ArcelorMittal Tubarão. This paper shows the pioneering of the development and the gains from the implementation of this device.
