Mais c'est après la Seconde Guerre mondiale que le théâtre pour les jeunes, en France, vécut une forte expansion lorsque s'y intéressèrent aussi Jean Vilar ou Jacques Copeau, en association avec l'actrice Suzanne Bing. En 1957, Léon Chancerel et Rose-Marie Moudoues fondèrent l'ATEJ (Association du théâtre pour l'enfance et la jeunesse, futur centre français de l'ASSITEJ). Lors du festival d'Avignon de 1969, Catherine Dasté (fille de Jean Dasté et de Marie-Hélène Dasté, dite Maiène, elle-même actrice, costumière et fille de Jacques Copeau), fut programmée par Vilar pour des spectacles jeune public comme L'Arbre sorcier ou Jérôme et la tortue, qu'elle avait écrits avec des enfants. En 1973, ce fut la création par Jack Lang et Antoine Vitez d'un éphémère Théâtre national des enfants, à Chaillot. De cette époque, Sibylle Lesourd rend compte dans ce volume, à la fois pour la France et pour l'Italie, en montrant combien le travail d'animation, dont Catherine Dasté est une figure, a pu constituer « une préhistoire du théâtre pour les jeunes ».
