El mercado de la Base de la Pirámide (BoP) o mercado de los pobres, se ha convertido en un segmento de mercado de interés para empresas en el ámbito mundial. En Colombia, representa más del 60% de la población. El artículo analiza los factores culturales, sociales y psicológicos queinfluyen en el comportamiento de consumo de personas de la BoPque residen en zonas rurales y urbanas en el departamento Norte de Santander. El paradigma es positivista deductivo-lógico. Los datos analizados provienen de un cuestionario aplicado a una muestra de 2.394 personas. Para el contraste de hipótesis de asociación entre la variable independiente, zona de residencia (urbana y rural) y las variables dependientes (factores culturales, sociales y psicológicos)se utiliza la pruebade chicuadrado, con nivel de significación α = 0.05, para las de tipo nominal y para las de tipo ordinal o continua, la prueba de U Mann-Whitney. Los resultados dan cuenta que en todas las variables dependientes analizadas, excepto el nivel de ingresos, existen diferencias significativas entre los consumidores de zonas urbanas y los de zonas rurales. Este resultado sirve como base a empresas que quieran ofrecer productos o servicios al segmento de mercado de la BoP, para el diseño de estrategias de marketing que se ajusten a los consumidores de zonas urbanas y rurales.
