La interculturalidad en el Ecuador se inserta como un tema trascendental en diferentes ámbitos como la salud, la educación y la comunicación, entre otros; mediante la aplicación de políticas públicas. El sistema educativo no escapa de esta realidad, constituye un eje transversal, tanto a nivel de educación básica, bachillerato y superior. No obstante, existen una serie de aproximaciones en torno al concepto de interculturalidad que ocasiona que su aplicabilidad se realice desde la perspectiva de quien la enuncia y su contexto. Por un lado, se relaciona con la educación bilingüe, los pueblos y nacionalidades; por otro lado, con movimientos migratorios. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar las diferentes voces y visiones que tienen los docentes acerca de la interculturalidad. El estudio se realizó bajo un enfoque cualitativo interpretativo de carácter hermenéutico. Se aplicó entrevistas semiestructuradas a docentes del sistema educativo nacional e intercultural bilingüe provenientes de diferentes territorios del país. El principal hallazgo está relacionado a la problemática de su definición y polisemia de significados que están articulados a conceptos de identidad, cultura y saberes. Así como al respeto, tolerancia, interacción y diferencia. Se destaca la Constitución del 2008 y la Ley Orgánica de Educación Intercultural como las principales normativas en materia de interculturalidad. También, la necesidad de reconceptualizar el concepto de interculturalidad, pasando de una definición descriptiva o prescriptiva a una perspectiva crítica. De esta manera, se convierta en una herramienta emancipadora para la transformación de las estructuras, instituciones y relaciones sociales para construir sociedades en el marco de igualdad oportunidades.
