Abstract The galvannealed coated (GA) is distinguished by having a structure containing Fe-Zn phases, which gives it excellent performance on highly demanding applications. The coating quality is determined by the galvannealing treatment, because of its effects on Fe-Zn compounds formation. The treatment influence is even more pronounced in bake hardenable steels, due the presence of alloying elements that change their reactivity. In this study, the effects of different galvannealing conditions on the GA coating formation on BH steels were evaluated. For this, galvannealing cycles at temperatures varying from 530°C to 580°C were simulated in laboratory scale. In addition to the completed cycles, interrupted cycles were also carried out, stopping the cycle during the soaking step by quenching the samples, aiming to evaluate the microstructure throughout the whole treatments. The results allowed determining the nucleation and growth mechanisms of the Fe-Zn intermetallic compounds, and correlating them with the characteristics of the final product, in order to establish appropriate ranges for processing this material.
INFLUENCE OF THE ZINC BATH ALUMINUM CONTENT ON THE SURFACE QUALITY OF GALVANNEALED COATINGS AbstractGalvannealed steels are widely used due to its excellent corrosion resistance. In addition, these steels have high surface quality, which is an important requirement for demanding applications such as in the automotive industry. An important parameter for the quality of galvannealed steel is the aluminum content in the zinc bath. In this study, a hot-dip process simulator (HDPS) was used to investigate the influence of aluminum content in the bath on the surface quality of the galvannealed coating; baths with 0.09% and 0.14% effective aluminum were evaluated. To follow the formation of Fe-Zn phases, galvanizing cycles were interrupted along the steps of immersion in the bath and heat treatment. Using the GDOES, it was possible to follow the variations of aluminum concentration within the coating during the formation of the phases. The simulation results showed that the lowest effective aluminum in the bath have favored the kinetics of Zn-Fe phases formation during heat treatment and have decreased the occurrence of regions with bright appearance on the coating, improving the surface quality.
EFFECT OF THE SOAKING AFTER THE INDUCTION HEATING ON THE GALVANNEALED COATING FORMATION ON BAKE HARDENABLE STEELS AbstractThe galvannealing treatment models, with isothermal soaking after the induction heating, enables the optimization of the heat input to form Fe-Zn intermetallic compounds, which contributes significantly to obtain high quality GA coatings. In this study, the effects of galvannealing conditions in the GA coating formation on BH steels were evaluated. Simulations varying the galvannealing model with isothermal and cooling cycles immediately after the induction heating, the heating temperature between 570°C and 525°C and the soaking time until 20 seconds were performed in laboratory scale. In all simulations, in addition to the complete cycles, incomplete cycles were also performed with discontinuations during the soaking step, by quenching the samples in order to evaluate the coating microstructure throughout treatment. To characterize the coatings, analysis of chemical composition, microstructure, quantitative depth profile and adhesion were performed. The results showed the characteristics of the GA coating formation on BH steels and established the galvannealing conditions for processing these steels, in order to obtain optimized microstructures for the most demanding applications.
