Resumen El objetivo del estudio consiste en analizar desde la perspectiva histórico-crítica las prácticas políticas — ya sean politizadas o despolitizadas — de trabajadoras sociales1 del Área Metropolitana de Monterrey (AMM), Nuevo León, México, que laboran tanto en áreas de intervención tradicionales como emergentes. Para la investigación se seleccionaron 9 instituciones y 11 trabajadoras sociales; se aplicó una entrevista a profundidad, un cuestionario sobre datos personales y de formación profesional, una guía de observación y un diario de campo. Los resultados arrojaron que, si bien, la práctica del trabajo social tiene como ideario ético-político contribuir al bienestar social; ésta se transforma con las instituciones, las políticas sociales, el modelo de producción y la cultura, y que, las participantes y los sujetos de intervención comparten una desprotección social que resulta clave para la despolitización de ambos.
