SPECTRO-TEMPORAL CHARACTERIZATION OF Eucalyptus spp. CANOPIES BY TM/Landsat 5 RADIOMETRIC DATAABSCTRACT: TM/Landsat 5 images (April and May 2009) from Capão Bonito (SP) region where Eucalyptus urophilla, Eucalyptus grandis and a hybrid of both species have been planted were utilized in the spectral characterization of some stands that presented structural differences explained mainly by age. These images have been converted to physical values such as surface reflectance factors and from these values principal components images were generated. The dispersion of PC1 and PC2 on a bi-dimensional space has been evaluated to identify tendencies of pixels positioning. Results have shown that for young eucalyptus canopies (up to 3 years old) the positioning is well defined, occupying the lower part of the dispersion clouds and far from the graph origin (zero). This result indicates more participation of the lower portions of the canopies, which presents lower values of reflectance in the near infrared (bare soil or dry branches) and high reflectance in the visible region. The older canopies presented higher influence of photosynthetic active leaves rather than the shadowed and lower portions of the canopies. The spectral characterization of eucalyptus canopies at the two temporal set of data was consistent.
Abstract:Relationships between biophysical parameters and radiometric data have been tested and evaluated by several professionals using empirical and/or physical approaches. Remote sensing data collected from airborne or orbital platforms are, of course, influenced by different factors, such as illumination/observation geometry (data collection geometry), atmospheric effects, etc., rather than by target spectral properties. Besides that, the target topographic positioning actually defines the amount of incident energy, as well as the amount of energy that is reflected toward the sensor. The sum of both data collection geometry and topographic positioning defines the so-called "local illumination". The objective of this paper was to evaluate the influence of local illumination on empirical relationships between a biophysical variable (plant area index, PAI) and two vegetation indices calculated from Resourcesat/Linear Imaging Self-Scanner sensor (LISS-3) orbital data. Local illumination was expressed by the cosine factor (Fcos) and calculated from topographic and solar position data at three different dates. The study area was based on a typical Brazilian southeastern forest fragment located in the Augusto Ruschi municipal preservation park dispersed on roughhouse topography. PAI was estimated by hemispherical photographs taken under the forest canopy from sample points arbitrarily dispersed on the forest fragment. Results confirmed a stronger relationship between vegetation indices and local illumination conditions. OPEN ACCESSRemote Sens. 2014, 6 6267
Empirical approaches and, more recently, physical approaches, have grounded the establishment of logical connections between radiometric variables derived from remote data and biophysical variables derived from vegetation cover. This study was aimed at evaluating correlations of dendrometric and density data from canopies of Eucalyptus spp., as collected in Capão Bonito forest unit, with radiometric data from imagery acquired by the TM/Landsat-5 sensor on two orbital passages over the study site (dates close to fi eld data collection). Results indicate that stronger correlations were identifi ed between crown dimensions and canopy height with near-infrared spectral band data (ρ s 4), irrespective of the satellite passage date. Estimates of spatial distribution of dendrometric data and canopy density (D) using spectral characterization were consistent with the spatial distribution of tree ages during the study period. Statistical tests were applied to evaluate performance disparities of empirical models depending on which date data were acquired. Results indicated a signifi cant difference between models based on distinct data acquisition dates.Key words: Spectral characterization, estimate of biophysical data, refl ectância de dosséis.
