The Libyan city of Misrata was the focus of an intense period of fighting between government forces loyal to Gaddafi and rebels to the regime during the civil uprising in 2011. For a six-month period, the city was cut off from the outside world, apart from intermittent access from the sea, with limited medical facilities and staff to treat the growing number of casualties. Here, the background to the conflict, how the medical facilities were arranged in the city and the types of head, face and neck surgical procedures performed are described, alongside the lessons learned and suggestions for future conflicts.
