Zwischen den Zeilen lesen: Bei der Adsorption von Octachlorzinkphthalocyanin‐Molekülen auf Ag(111) wird die Bildung dreier schwach gebundener Netzwerke beobachtet. Der Einbau von Corannulenmolekülen in diese Phasen – zur Bildung stabiler Reihen oder schachbrettartiger Muster – lässt sich rastertunnelmikroskopisch nachweisen (siehe Bild). Nach dem Entfernen der Corannulenmoleküle bei 4.6 K verbleiben künstliche Muster auf der Oberfläche.
Buckybowls: Mithilfe von Rastertunnelmikroskopie und Strukturberechnungen wurde die Adsorption von Penta‐tert‐butylcorannulen (mit fünfzähliger Symmetrie) auf einer Cu(111)‐Oberfläche (mit dreizähliger Symmetrie) untersucht. Abhilfe wegen der nicht passenden Symmetrien schafft die Bildung von Untereinheiten aus drei Molekülen mit dreizähliger Symmetrie, die zusammen mit Einzelmolekülen die Ebene nahezu perfekt bedecken (siehe Bild).
