1. A la hora de decidir con quién embarcarse rumbo a América, Eduarda Mansilla no tiene dudas: prefiere naufragar con los franceses, antes que llegar a destino con los ingleses. Aunque al amparo de cierta sonrisa irónica, esta premisa queda firmemente establecida desde las primeras páginas de los Recuerdos de viaje.Es que la eficiencia "sajona" se logra a costos humanamente altos: los buques ingleses se encuentran tripulados por hombres silenciosos y graves, que se limitan a cumplir su tarea con exactitud tediosamente mecánica. Y entre esos hombres se destaca muy especialmente el capitán: "un hombre mustio, silencioso, casi siempre vulgar" que contrasta con el comandante de los buques franceses, siempre "charmant, homme du monde" (9). 1 La vulgaridad no es aquí un pecado menor; en particular, porque una de las estrategias fundamentales de Mansilla consiste en borrar muy cuidadosamente toda diferencia entre categorías estéticas y morales. Ser vulgar involucra algo más que equivocarse en el uso de la platería, confundiendo la cuchara de postre con la sopera: una persona vulgar es, ante todo, aquella que propicia formas de vida y valores inaceptables.La vulgaridad es un concepto que media entre lo estético y lo moral, siendo al mismo tiempo el término inferior de una dicotomía cuyo extremo dominante es el high life. De esta manera se redefine el dilema básico de las nuevas sociedades americanas, que deja de ser civilización o barbarie: porque la vulgaridad, que es un nuevo nombre de lo abominable, es al mismo tiempo el producto más típico de la modernidad.
Time is money.Esta frase que se repite una y otra vez en el texto pasa por ser el principio lógico del que se desprende todo el estilo de vida americano. La vulgaridad se encuentra indisolublemente unida a cierta lógica instrumental; no es que la vulgaridad del capitan inglés salpique accidentalmente su impoluta eficacia: los ingleses son vulgares porque son eficientes. La vulgaridad participa necesariamente de la lógica de la eficiencia.La cultura de la eficiencia es aquella que pone una desmesurada atención en los fines, sin concentrarse debidamente en los medios. La consigna es llegar a destino, no entretener al pasajero. RESUMENEn este trabajo se examina el concepto de naturaleza en la obra en prosa de José Martí. Se trata de un concepto que ha sido largamente elaborado por la filosofía moderna antes de su apropiación literaria por parte del romanticismo. Así, comienzo reseñando algunas ideas filosóficas típicas de la modernidad que considero relevantes para entender los argumentos que siguen. Si mi interpretación es correcta, Martí maneja un doble concepto de naturaleza: por una parte, se trata de una fuerza que actúa de acuerdo con leyes poéticas precisas (leyes que habrán de ser descubiertas por poetas); por otra parte, es un poder disruptivo que sistemáticamente destruye cualquier sistema que construyamos para encapsular sus productos. Finalmente, señalo algunas maneras en que la discusión precedente puede usarse para dar cuenta de algunas conexiones entre los proyectos poéticos y políticos de Martí.Palabras claves: Filosofía, modernidad, naturaleza, sujeto cartesiano.
ABSTRACTThis paper is devoted to an examination of the concept of nature in José Martí's prose work. The concept of nature has been highly elaborated by early modern philosophers well before its appropriation by romantic writers. Thus, I start by charting some typically modern philosophical ideas, which I deem relevant to the following discussion.
