The present study explored the eco-friendly approach of utilizing plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) inoculation and foliar application of silicon (Si) to improve the physiology, growth, and yield of mung bean under saline conditions. We isolated 18 promising PGPR from natural saline soil in Saudi Arabia, and screened them for plant-growth-promoting activities. Two effective strains were selected from the screening trial, and were identified as Enterobacter cloacae and Bacillus drentensis using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA gene sequencing techniques, respectively. Subsequently, in a 2-year mung bean field trial, using a randomized complete block design with a split-split plot arrangement, we evaluated the two PGPR strains and two Si levels (1 and 2 kg ha−1), in comparison with control treatments, under three different saline irrigation conditions (3.12, 5.46, and 7.81 dS m−1). The results indicated that salt stress substantially reduced stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, relative water content (RWC), total chlorophyll content, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoid content, plant height, leaf area, dry biomass, seed yield, and salt tolerance index. The PGPR strains and Si levels independently improved all the aforementioned parameters. Furthermore, the combined application of the B. drentensis strain with 2 kg Si ha−1 resulted in the greatest enhancement of mung bean physiology, growth, and yield. Overall, the results of this study provide important information for the benefit of the agricultural industry.

Salinity impedes soil and crop productivity in over 900 million ha of arable lands worldwide due to the excessive accumulation of salt (NaCl). To utilize saline soils in agriculture, halophytes (salt-tolerant plants) are commonly cultivated. However, most food crops are glycophytes (salt-sensitive). Thus, to enhance the productivity of saline soils, gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) as well as bio-organic (combined use of organic materials, such as compost and straw with the inoculation of beneficial microbes) amendments have been continuously recognized to improve the biological, physical and chemical properties of saline soils. CaSO4·2H2O regulates the exchange of sodium (Na+) for calcium (Ca2+) on the clay surfaces, thereby increasing the Ca2+/Na+ ratio in the soil solution. Intracellularly, Ca2+ also promotes a higher K+/Na+ ratio. Simultaneously, gypsum furnishes crops with sulfur (S) for enhanced growth and yield through the increased production of phytohormones, amino acids, glutathione and osmoprotectants, which are vital elicitors in plants’ responses to salinity stress. Likewise, bio-organic amendments improve the organic matter and carbon content, nutrient cycling, porosity, water holding capacity, soil enzyme activities and biodiversity in saline soils. Overall, the integrated application of gypsum and bio-organic amendments in cultivating glycophytes and halophytes is a highly promising strategy in enhancing the productivity of saline soils.

The present investigation examined the effects of silicon application and inoculation with the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Enterobacter cloacae and Bacillus drentensis on alleviating ion toxicity, regulating osmolytes accumulation, and productivity of field-grown mung bean under saline water irrigation. Inoculated seeds were grown in sandy loam soils (electrical conductivity: 2.78 dS m À1 ) and irrigated with water with three salinity levels (3.12, 5.46, and 7.81 dS m À1 ) using a drip irrigation system. Foliar application of silicon was conducted twice (3 wk after sowing and at flowering stage) at 1 or 2 kg ha À1 . The silicon application and PGPR inoculation countered the adverse effects of salinity on mung bean by decreasing proline, total phenols, and lignin contents in leaves and increasing the total soluble sugars in comparison to the control. Silicon and rhizobacteria also reduced Na þ content and increased K þ , Ca 2þ , and Si contents in shoots compared to the control under all salinity levels. Furthermore, the significant interaction between Si and PGPR increased the pod yield. Among the treatments, Si (2 kg ha À1 ) application and B. drentensis inoculation remained the most prominent for the studied traits at all salinity levels. Thus, the current study suggested that application of rhizobacteria along with Si mitigates the effects of salinity on mung bean by regulating osmolytes, reducing lignification, improving mineral uptake, and decreasing tissue Na þ content.

The present study evaluated the interactive effect of water deficit irrigation (WDI) and nitrogen application on Sorghum sudanense growth, biomass accumulation, nitrogen content and water productivity for two consecutive seasons and three cuts. The WDI of 50, 30 and 10% depletion ratios (different application rate and frequency) along with four levels (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha−1) of nitrogen fertilizer were applied in three splits. The WDI of 10% depletion ratio recorded significantly higher (15–17%) fresh and dry biomass accumulation of both leaf and stem as compared with WDI of 50%. Nitrogen application improved all growth traits irrespective of the applied levels of WDI, season and cut number. The interaction of WDI of 30% depletion ratio and N200 outcompeted all other treatments for plant nitrogen and protein contents, as the resulting increment was 10–22% higher as compared to control. Of the different cut numbers, the first cutting ascribed the maximum value for plant protein contents and stated up to 32% improvement over second and third cuttings. By increasing the rate of nitrogen application, a significant increment in crop water productivity was also measured that attributed at least a threefold higher value for stem over leaf. In essence, WDI of 10% depletion ratio and nitrogen rate of 200 kg ha−1 were the optimum levels that improved Sudan grass growth, biomass and water use efficiency; moreover, the 30% depletion ratio favoured plant nitrogen content. By using a WDI approach, we can improve our forage yield with a limited amount of water by increasing irrigation frequency. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
