ABSTRACT: This paper explores performance measurement in incentive plans. Based on theory, we argue that differences in the nature of jobs between blue-and white-collar employees lead to differences in incentive systems. We find that performance measurement for white-collar workers is broader in terms of the performance measures, the organizational level of performance measurement and the time horizon. This paper investigates the effects of children on women's wages in the Finnish private sector. The paper finds evidence of the motherhood wage penalty, the penalty varying with the length of the child-related career break. Mothers staying at home no longer than for 2 years face considerably smaller penalties than mothers spending longer periods at home. The negative wage effects of children decrease, however, quickly with time. For example, mothers who experience a career break of 2 years or less do not lag behind non-mothers in terms of wages after the second year from the return to employment. There is also variation in the motherhood wage penalty across the wage distribution. The penalty is higher at the top of the distribution than in the middle of it, especially in the cases of prolonged child-related career breaks. ABSTRACT: In Finnish manufacturing, the gender wage gap more than doubles during the first ten years in the labor market. This paper studies the factors contributing to the gender gap in early-career wage growth. The analysis shows that the size of the gender gap in wage growth varies with mobility status the gap being much higher when changing employers compared to within-firm wage growth. Several explanations for the gender gap in wage growth based on human capital theory and theory of compensating wage differentials are considered. However, most of the gap in wage growth remains unexplained. Further analysis documents that the female penalty in wage growth increases significantly as we move along the conditional wage growth distribution with a sharp acceleration in the gap at the top of the distribution. TIIVISTELMÄ: Sukupuolten välinen palkkaero yli kaksinkertaistuu teollisuuden toimihenkilöiden keskuudessa ensimmäisten kymmenen vuoden aikana työmarkkinoille siirtymisen jälkeen. Tässä tutkimuksessa analysoidaan tekijöitä havaitun palkkakasvueron taustalla. Tarkempi tarkastelu osoittaa, että miesten ja naisten välisen palkkakasvueron suuruus on yhteydessä toimihenkilöiden työmarkkinaliikkuvuuteen: palkkakasvussa, joka liittyy työnantajan vaihdoksiin, on selkeästi suurempi ero sukupuolten välillä verrattuna palkkakasvuun yritysten sisällä. Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan useita inhimillisin pääoman teorian ja kompensoivien palkkaerojen teorian tarjoamia selityksiä sukupuolten välisille palkkakasvuerolle. Huomattava osa erosta jää kuitenkin selittämättä. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään lisäksi sukupuolten palkkakasvueroa palkkakasvujakauman eri osissa. In the Finnish private sector, the gender wage gap increases significantly during the first 10 years after labour market entry, accounting for most of the lifetime increase in the gender wage differentials. This paper investigates the reasons for this gender difference in early-career wage development. By focusing on university graduates the paper considers several explanations based on the human capital theory, job mobility, and labour market segregation. The results suggest that only about 20-26 per cent of the average early-career gender wage gap is explained by gender differences in experience, the field of education, employer characteristics, and mobility. A substantial unexplained gap thus remains. Of the investigated factors gender differences in the field of education and work experience matter most. Copyright 2008 The Author.
