Este trabalho aborda a importância da aprendizagem baseada em problemas no ensino superior, considerando que o modelo tradicional de educação está esgotado e não mais atende às expectativas dos alunos e da sociedade contemporânea em função de suas mudanças no âmbito tecnológico, econômico e sociocultural. Assim, esse relato busca identificar os desafios e impactos na aplicação da metodologia ativa no ensino superior com a aplicação da Aprendizagem baseada em problemas – (Problem Based Learning - PBL), considerando a necessidade de o aluno sair do seu estado passivo, para uma participação efetiva, tornando-se protagonista do seu processo de aprendizagem, com utilização de práticas que o motive e o estimule pela aprendizagem significativa, desenvolvendo conhecimentos, habilidades e atitudes, por meio de reflexão, experiências reais e simuladas, para que de fato estejam preparados para as transformações tecnológicas e sociais em que vivemos. A partir da revisão bibliográfica de diferentes trabalhos publicados sobre o tema, em diferentes contextos, os trabalhos, na percepção dos alunos e professores, relataram vantagens e melhorias no processo de aprendizagem, no desenvolvimento de habilidades essenciais, como habilidades de comunicação, autonomia, autodidatismo e pensamento crítico, embora a metodologia encontre desafios na sua aplicação e considerando não tratar de um método perfeito ou unânime entre docentes e discentes, é necessário maiores investimentos em recursos humanos e materiais, capacitação docente, discente, além compreender e respeitar as particularidades de perfil de aluno e área de formação, para superar resistências e atingir seus objetivos.
