The main objective of this article is to introduce novel 3D bio‐inspired auxetic meta‐structures printed with soft/hard polymers for energy absorption/dissipation applications under single and cyclic loading–unloading. Meta‐structures are developed based on understanding the hyper‐elastic feature of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) polymers, elastoplastic behavior of polyamide 12 (PA 12), and snowflake inspired design, derived from theory and experiments. The 3D meta‐structures are fabricated by multi‐jet fusion 3D printing technology. The feasibility and mechanical performance of different meta‐structures are assessed experimentally and numerically. Computational finite element models (FEMs) for the meta‐structures are developed and verified by the experiments. Mechanical compression tests on TPU auxetics show unique features like large recoverable deformations, stress softening, mechanical hysteresis characterized by non‐coincident compressive loading–unloading curve, Mullins effect, cyclic stress softening, and high energy absorption/dissipation capacity. Mechanical testing on PA 12 meta‐structures also reveals their elastoplastic behavior with residual strains and high energy absorption/dissipation performance. It is shown that the developed FEMs can replicate the main features observed in the experiments with a high accuracy. The material‐structural model, conceptual design, and results are expected to be instrumental in 3D printing tunable soft and hard meta‐devices with high energy absorption/dissipation features for applications like lightweight drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Bonded patches are widely used in several industry sectors for repairing damaged plates, cracks in metallic structures, and reinforcement of damaged structures. Composite patches have optimal properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio, easiness in being applied, and high flexibility. Due to recent rapid growth in the aerospace industry, analyses of adhesively bonded patches applicable to repairing cracked structures have become of great significance. In the present study, the fatigue behavior of the aluminum alloy, repaired by a double-sided glass/epoxy composite patch, is studied numerically. More specifically, the effect of applying a double-sided composite patch on the fatigue life improvement of a damaged aluminum 6061-T6 is analyzed. 3D finite element numerical modeling is performed to analyze the fatigue performance of both repaired and unrepaired aluminum plates using the Abaqus package. To determine the fatigue life of the aluminum 6061-T6 plate, first, the hysteresis loop is determined, and afterward, the plastic strain amplitude is calculated. Finally, by using the Coffin-Manson equation, fatigue life is predicted and validated against the available experimental data from the literature. Results reveal that composite patches increase the fatigue life of cracked structures significantly, ranging from 55% to 100% for different applied stresses.
A leaf spring is a simple form of spring commonly used for the suspension in wheeled vehicles. Due to their high strength to weight ratio, high stiffness, and high impact energy absorption, fiber-reinforced composite leaf springs gain considerable interest recently as a potential alternative to conventional leaf springs with relatively high weight. In the present study, a novel composite leaf spring consists of two composite face layers, and a soft and flexible viscoelastic core is proposed. Employing viscoelastic materials in structures reduces undesirable vibrations leading to fatigue and damage of structures. A numerical method is used to design and analyze composite leaf springs with a viscoelastic core using the Abaqus software package. Results are compared with those from well-known analytical methods, finite element methods, and experiments. Results show that the proposed novel composite leaf spring can withstand the stresses caused by static and impact forces, reduce post-impact vibrations, and prevent undesirable system vibrations. The viscoelastic layer increases the strain energy capacity of proposed composite leaf springs compared to conventional composite leaf springs and enhances the composite leaf spring performance against bump impact.
