AbstractThis paper presents the relationship between anomalies in the shape of the longitudinal profile and the migration processes of the Mogi Guaçu River meanders, Northeastern State of São Paulo. The anomalies are convexities and concavities in the longitudinal profile and they are linked to geological structures and lithologies more or less resistant to fluvial erosion. The anomalies affect the fluvial gradient and the meanders migrations of two alluvial plain of the Mogi Guaçu River. One of them has migrations restricted to the meander belt, while in the other the meanders migrate to the whole plain. Results suggest that the fluvial dynamics of the Mogi Guaçu River creates the alluvial plains to adjust the shape of the longitudinal profile. This adjustment reduces the longitudinal profile anomalies produced by the geological structures and lithologies.Key words: longitudinal profile, fluvial migration, Mogi Guaçu River.
