O presente estudo tem como objetivo verificar se os idosos participantes de grupos de convivência de Florianópolis são independentes e adeptos a uma prática regular e sistematizada de atividade física. MÉTODOS: A amostra foi constituída por 258 idosos, com idade 72,0 ± 8,0 anos, participantes de Grupos de Convivência do Programa Viver Ativo de Florianópolis. A coleta de dados foi realizada em forma de entrevista por meio de dois questionários: um questionário multidimensional, desenvolvido pelos autores, reuniu informações referentes aos dados socioeconômicos, percepção de saúde, presença de doenças e estágios de mudança de comportamento dos participantes e o questionário Medida de Independência Funcional que foi utilizado para avaliar e classificar o nível de independência funcional dos idosos. RESULTADOS: Entre os 258 idosos participantes de Grupos de Convivência 96,9% são mulheres, 64% com faixa etária entre 60 e 74 anos, 31% moram sozinhos, 54,2% são aposentadas, 34,9% completaram o primário, 53,9% pertencem ao extrato econômico C, 84,1% possuem uma ou mais doenças, em média são independentes e são fisicamente ativos, embora metade dos idosos (50,4%) tenha percepção de saúde negativa.
