Introduction: Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is a serious condition responsible for irreversible blindness. It is one of the main causes of blindness in developing countries. Purpose: To assess the knowledges, attitudes and practices relating to Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) in the adult population in northern Benin. Patients and methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study. It concerned all persons aged 18 years old and over. We had done a two-stage sampling. The Chi2 test, at the 5% threshold, had been used to study the associations. Results: Of a total of 560 subjects, 548 (97.85%) participated in the study. The mean age was 33.1 ± 16.5 years. The male sex was more represented (61.13%) with a sex ratio of 1.57. The secondary level was represented with 46.35% (n = 254) and as an occupation, 22.63% (n = 124) were traders. 70.99% (n = 389) of subjects had heard of eye disease, of which only 8.76% (n = 48) had heard of glaucoma. It is called Naradiou in Bariba. But only 1.24% had a good knowledge of the disease. 50% (n = 24) did not known the cause, 4.17% (n = 2) attributed it to the curse and 2.08% (n = 1) to witchcraft. 72.50% (n = 35) knew that glaucoma could progress to blindness and 59.09% (n = 13) thought it was irreversible. 79.17% (n = 38) of subjects knew that there is a treatment, 52.63% (n = 20) said it was medical, 36.84% (n = 14) said it was surgical and 10, 53% (n = 4) thought it is traditional. The attitude was bad in 57.74% of the cases. Education and occupation were significantly associated with glaucoma knowledge and practice, but only gender was statistically related to attitude with a p-value of 0.0052. Conclusion: The level of knowledge of POAG in the adult population in northern Benin is alarming, as is the attitude and the practice which remains to be improved. Communication programs for behavior change must be initiated in order to reduce the rate of blindness linked to this pathology in this population.
Purpose To illustrate a case report of rapid metastatic death due to a ciliary body melanoma in a a young female of 19 years of age, with no hepatic metastatic disease. Methods A young algerian girl was send for conservative treatment for a ciliary body tumor of the left eye on the 19th of march 2012.This eye was blind, with a white cataract.Rubeosis iridis was present on the whole iris surface with total angle closure ,ocular pressure was 41 mm and US showed a temporal ciliary body tumor of 3.5 mm in height and 10 mm in diameter . Results An enucleation was performed on March 20th , but the patient had to be hospitalized on the same afternoon in Intensive Care Unit for drainage of bilateral pleural effusion, purely inflammatory .Full Body CT Scan has shown brain secondary foci of 3 and 5 mm on both frontal lobes.A nodular lesion of 7 mm was also present on the Fowler lung lobe. The liver was not invaded but massive mesenteric necrotic lesions with peritoneal effusion were found. Surgical biopsy of the mesenteric lesions was done in the General Surgery Unit on March 22nd showing melanoma cells. In the same time the ocular pathologists diagnosis was an epithelioid ciliary body melanoma of 10x10 mm. On April 3rd a pleurodesis was created with pleural biopsies in the Thoracic Surgery Unit.Mesothelial pleural hyperplasia without malignancy sign was diagnosed.A chemotherapy with Muphoran has been advised by oncologists and begun soon after she returned in her country where she died at the end of May . Conclusion Death by metastatic disease can also occur without detectable hepatic lesions by US or CT Scan in case of severe ciliary body melanoma. The mechanism of responsible mesenteric lesions for death in the hepatic vicinity has to be explained.
ResultsSocio-demographic features of the military .One hundred and forty-seven patients were included in our study. The average age of the patients was 37.17 ± 12.62 years with extremes of 19 and 66 years. The 28-37 age groups accounted for 38.78% of patients (Table1). AbstractIntroduction: Eye conditions affect the military in its operations and can be an obstacle to the promotion of a soldier. Purpose:To determine the eye conditions encountered among military staff in Parakou.
Uveal melanomas are the most common primary intraocular. We report a case of melanoma of the ciliary body from the left eye of a 21 y old patient. Ophthalmological examination of the left eye revealed the presence of a poorly pigmented tumor that presses back the lower temporal equatorial lens. The bottom of the eye is uninterpretable. The ultrasound measurements of the tumor were 3.5 mm thick over 10 mm in diameter. The diagnosis of ciliary body melanoma was posed. However, the patient has atypical karyotypic abnormalities that might suggest an ocular metastasis of another unknown primitive tumor.
