PurposeStatus of fiscal health of local governments helps in determining planned budget and realistic action plan for citizens’ wellbeing. This paper aims to assess the fiscal health of local governments in Bangladesh.Design/methodologyUsing data from 18 south-western municipalities of Bangladesh during the fiscal year 2018–19, this research measures fiscal health by applying Wang, Dennis and Tu’s solvency test and Brown’s Ten-Point Test.FindingsThe result shows that one-tenth of the entire municipalities are endowed with better position, whereas almost 39 percent of municipalities are in the worst situation and nearly 50 percent of municipalities are in the average category. Because of having limited liabilities, the municipalities are endowed with more than enough cash solvency and reasonable level of long-run solvency. The key problems are that budgetary solvency of all municipalities is not satisfactory, and service expenses are more than their revenue generation. This study suggests improving the financial capabilities of the municipalities through properly using their resources, generating loans, and claiming a need-based budget from the central government.OriginalityThe paper investigates the status of fiscal solvency of local governments in Bangladesh in a new dimension. The findings might be helpful to policymakers in budgeting for development initiatives of local governments in Bangladesh so that citizens’ better wellbeing is ensured.
PurposeThis paper investigates the impact of individualistic (health) and collectivistic considerations (environmental) on the purchasing intention of organic foods.Design/methodology/approachThe study collected 391 responses from service holders of diversified tiers from Bangladesh. It considers two-step structural equation model (SEM), as well as the Ordinal Logistic regression to analyze the fact.FindingsSEM analysis explores that, both the individualistic and collectivistic considerations affect purchasing intention of organic foods. The regression result finds that income, the number of earning members, occupation, age and BMI are influential determinants of weekly purchasing frequency of organic foods. This research suggests, along with consumer's economic solvency an organized market with dissemination of health and environmental benefits of organic foods acts as a catalyst for purchasing intention of those products.Research limitations/implicationsHowever, there is still scope of investigating intention-behavior gap between the actual purchasing behavior and purchasing intention, which is not addressed in this study.Originality/valueTo understand the perception of comparatively educated and solvent people toward purchasing intention of organic foods, this research is one of the pioneering attempts in the context of an unorganized organic food market.
Quality of public health care services is a necessary step in the process of improving health care services. It plays an important role for preventing the overuse, underuse and misuse of health care services and ensuring patient safety. Thus, the study aims to investigate the determinants of satisfactory public health care services in rural Bangladesh. Data are collected from 150 respondents of six upazilas in Khulna and Bagerhat districts who spend at least one day in the upazila health complex for receiving treatment. Quantitative analysis is performed through factor analysis and ordered logistic regression. This study demonstrates that almost three-fourth of the respondents visit hospitals at least 3-4 times in a year, also exerts that almost 70% of the respondents earn/month on an average between BDT 5,001-10,000, whereas nearly 40% of the respondents are compelled to spend almost about BDT 2,001-4,000 for availing medical facilities. Ordered logistic regression demonstrates that, educational status of the respondents, financial & physical access to care and health personnel conduct have positively associated with the respondent level of satisfaction on health care services rendered by public health complexes. Therefore, it is vital to improve the related facilities to increase the satisfaction level. Thus, authors suggest improving the overall structure of rural health complex, ensure availability of essential drugs, increase the financial support to government or initiate community-based health insurance to reduce the out of pocket health expenditure to increase the patient satisfaction level.
