A comprehensive evaluation of 13 plant essential oils namely: caraway, chenopodium, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, garlic, geranium, lemon, matrecary, peppermint, rose, rosemary and thyme and 14 of their monoterpenoidal constituents: borneol, camphor, carvacrol, carveol, carvone (R and S), chlorothymol, cineol, cinnamaldehyde, citronellol, eugenol, geraneol, menthol, and thymol was investigated for their antibacterial activity against the two phytopathogenic bacteria, Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Erwinia carotovora var carotovora. Trials for improving the antibacterial activity by either structure modification or mixing with the three synergists: piperonyl butoxide, Triton X-100 and Tween 20 were achieved. New N-methyl carbamate derivatives based on monoterpenoids were introduced. Cinnamon, clove, chenopodium, caraway, rosemary and thyme oils proved to possess good antibacterial activity. Thymol, chlorothymol, and carvacrol were potent against the tested bacteria and quite close to the effect of the standard. Conversion of menthol into its carbamate derivative gave good enhancement in the bactericidal activity at all concentrations compared to menthol itself. Also, the carbamate derivatives of b-citronellol and borneol improved the bactericidal activity against E. carotovora, but decreased it against A. tumefaciens. Synergistic antibacterial activity of the tested monoterpenoids was observed when combined with each of the three synergists particularly with Triton X-100.

Miscarriage is the most common complication of pregnancy, which creates a significant workload for health-care professionals. For decades, surgical evacuation of the uterus has remained the conventional treatment of first-trimester miscarriage. Recently, non surgical treatments have been introduced with increasing popularity. This review explores the evidence in support of expectant management of first-trimester miscarriage. It is safe, effective and well-tolerated by women. It enhances women's choice and control. It generates significant cost savings compared with the traditional surgical management. Accurate diagnosis, counselling, 24/7 telephone advice and follow-up are among the important aspects of expectant management. More studies are needed to develop methods for identifying miscarriages suitable for expectant management.

Background:The global cancer burden falls disproportionately on low and middle-income countries (LMICs). One significant barrier to adequate cancer control in these countries is the lack of an adequately trained oncology workforce. Oncology education and training initiatives are a critical component of building the workforce. We performed a scoping review of published training and education initiatives for health professionals in LMICs to understand the strategies used to train the global oncology workforce. Methods:We searched Ovid MEDLINE and Embase from database inception (1947) to 4 March 2020. Articles were eligible if they described an oncology medical education initiative (with a clear intervention and outcome) within an LMIC. Articles were classified based on the target population, the level of medical education, degree of collaboration with another institution and if there was an e-learning component to the intervention.Findings: Of the 806 articles screened, 25 met criteria and were eligible for analysis. The majority of initiatives were targeted towards physicians and focused on continuing medical education. Almost all the initiatives were done in partnership with a collaborating organisation from a high-income country. Only one article described the impact of the initiative on patient outcomes. Less than half of the initiatives involved e-learning. Conclusions:There is a paucity of oncology training and education initiatives in LMICs published in English. Initiatives for non-physicians, efforts to foster collaboration within and between LMICs, knowledge sharing initiatives and studies that measure the impact of these initiatives on developing an effective workforce are highly recommended.
