The trinuclear complex, Au(I)3(MeN=COMe)3, which displays a number of remarkable properties including solvoluminescence, has been found to crystallize as three polymorphs. The new triclinic and monoclinic polymorphs crystallized as colorless blocks, whereas the original hexagonal polymorph formed colorless needles. These polymorphs differ in the manner in which the nearly planar molecules pack and in the nature of the aurophilic interactions between them. Each of the three polymorphs of Au(I)3(MeN=COMe)3 shows a distinctive emission spectrum, but only the original hexagonal polymorph shows the low-energy emission that is responsible for its solvoluminescence. Colorless Au(I)3(n-PentN=COMe)3 crystallized from diethyl ether as needles of an orthorhombic polymorph and blocks of a triclinic polymorph. These polymorphs differ in the orientation of the n-Pent substituents, in the orientation of the trimers with respect to one another, and in the nature of the aurophilic interactions between the molecules. Only the triclinic polymorph of Au(I)3(n-PentN=COMe)3 shows luminescence at room temperature, but it is not solvoluminescent. Colorless Au(I)3(i-PrN=COMe)3 has also been prepared and crystallographically characterized. The isopropyl groups protrude out of the plane of the nine-membered ring and prevent self-association. The closest Au...Au contact between molecules is 6.417 A. Crystalline Au(I)3(i-PrN=COMe)3 is not luminescent at room temperature.

The ability of the triangular gold(I) complex, Au(3)(MeN=COMe)(3), which as a solid displays the novel property of solvoluminescence (see: Vickery, J. C.; Olmstead, M. M.; Fung, E. Y.; Balch, A. L. Angew.Chem., Int. Ed. Engl. 1997, 36, 1179) to function as an electron donor has been demonstrated through spectroscopic studies and isolation of crystalline adducts with organic acceptor molecules. Four such adducts with nitro-9-fluorenones have been isolated and subject to single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. These are deep yellow [Au(3)(MeN=COMe)(3)].[2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone], red [Au(3)(MeN=COMe)(3)].[2,4,5,7-tetranitro-9-fluorenone], red [Au(3)(MeN=COEt)(3)](2).[2,7-dinitro-9-fluorenone], and red [Au(3)(MeN=COEt)(3)](2).[2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone]. The solid-state structures of [Au(3)(MeN=COMe)(3)].[2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone] and [Au(3)(MeN=COMe)(3)].[2,4,5,7-tetranitro-9-fluorenone] consist of columns in which the planar gold(I) trimers and the nearly planar nitro-9-fluorenones are interleaved with the gold trimers making face-to-face contact with the nitroaromatic portion of the electron acceptor. Thus the organic acceptors disrupt the aurophilic interactions present in crystalline [Au(3)(MeN=COMe)(3)] itself. However, in [Au(3)(MeN=COEt)(3)](2).[2,7-dinitro-9-fluorenone] and [Au(3)(MeN=COEt)(3)](2).[2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone], aurophilic interactions are found which produce dimers, [Au(3)(MeN=COEt)(3)](2), with nearly trigonal prismatic Au(6) cores. These dimers are interleaved with the nitro-9-fluorenone molecules to again form extended columns in which the components make face-to-face contact. Despite the fact that the gold atoms in [Au(3)(MeN=COMe)(3)] and [Au(3)(MeN=COEt)(3)] are in exposed sites and only two-coordinate, there is no evidence of additional coordination of the nitro-9-fluorenones with gold centers in the crystalline adducts.

X-ray crystallography reveals that individual molecules of Au(3)(NC(5)H(4))(3) self-associate through aurophilic interactions into two distinct structural motifs that involve both extended chains of molecules connected by pairwise Au.Au contacts and individual Au.Au contacts and discrete dimers linked by pairwise Au.Au contacts. The colorless or pale yellow crystals are remarkable for the formation of a distinct hourglass shape within the crystals that develops after months of standing in the atmosphere or after immersion in 4 M hydrochloric acid for a few days. The hourglass figures appear to result from the deposition of gold and are unusual in being formed by a chemical reaction within a crystal rather than as a result of dying the crystal during growth.

The preparation and X-ray crystal structures of (CyNC)Au(I)CN, (n-BuNC)Au(I)CN, and (i-PrNC)Au(I)CN.0.5CH(2)Cl(2) are reported and compared with those of (MeNC)Au(I)CN and (t-BuNC)Au(I)CN, which were previously described. These linear molecules are all organized through aurophilic interactions into three structural classes: simple chains ((CyNC)Au(I)CN and (t-BuNC)Au(I)CN), side-by-side chains in which two strands make Au...Au contact with each other ((n-BuNC)Au(I)CN), and nets in which multiple aurophilic interactions produce layers of gold(I) centers ((i-PrNC)Au(I)CN and (MeNC)Au(I)CN). All of these five solids dissolve to produce colorless, nonluminescent solutions with similar UV/vis spectra. However, each of the solids displays a unique luminescence with emission maxima occurring in the range 371-430 nm.
