Based on our findings during the first week and the 6 months (since starting drug) follow-ups, prescribing amantadine did not lead to reportable effects on the patients' level of consciousness, memory, disability, cognition, mortality and performance.

Introduction Penetrating brain injury (PBI) is uncommon among the civilian population. Here, we report two interesting cases of PBI. Case presentation The first patient was a 20-year-old male who sustained a penetrating head injury with a metal bar during an accident at work. The patient underwent early surgical intervention, and related meningitis was treated with antibiotics. The patient was discharged 45 days later with no deficit. The second patient was a 34-year-old male who was the victim of a violence attack and was admitted to hospital. He was struck by a knife to his right temporal bone. A brain computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated the tract of the knife within the brain parenchyma. The patient underwent conservative treatment. After several weeks, the patient was discharged in good health. Conclusion Although severe PBI has a poorer prognosis than a blunt brain injury, in treating of these patients, aggressive and timely surgical intervention, proper wide-spectrum antibiotic administration, stringent and diligent care in the intensive-care unit and careful management of the associated complications are mandated.

Background: Glucocerebrosidase (GBA) mutation is the most common genetic risk factor in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Transcranial sonography (TCS) shows increased substantia nigra (SN) echogenicity in both idiopathic and genetic forms of PD. The goal of this study was to compare maximal area of SN hyperechogenicity (aSNmax) and diameter of third ventricle (DTV) between GBA mutation carriers and healthy controls. Methods: Twenty-six carriers of GBA mutation and twenty-six healthy controls underwent TCS. The aSNmax and the DTV were measured. Mini-mental status examination (MMSE) and demographic data of the subjects were recorded, too. Results: Mean aSNmax in GBA mutation carriers was significantly higher (0.31 ± 0.06 cm2) than controls (0.16 ± 0.04 cm2). Moreover, DTV was significantly higher in GBA mutation carriers group (3.98 ± 0.90 vs 3.29 ± 0.56 cm). Conclusion: Increased SN echogenicity and increased third ventricle diameter in GBA mutation carriers may be caused by alterations in iron metabolism with reference to their genetic status.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is defined as a benign lesion of bone containing blood-filled channels divided by soft-tissue septa and mostly diagnosed in children and adolescents. In the present study, the case of a 7-year-old girl with spastic paraparesia and left foot drop was investigated. Spinal imaging revealed a large lytic mass in the posterior elements of the T2 vertebral body, which resulted in the partial collapse of the T2 vertebral body, a T1 to T3 dislocation, and a spinal sagittal imbalance. The patient underwent a two-stage surgical procedure including an anterior T2 corpectomy, T1/T2 and T2/T3 discectomy, anterior instrumentation, posterior total tumor resection, and posterior fixation with laminar hooks. Postoperative imaging demonstrated cord decompression and good spinal alignment. Although a spinal ABC is a rare entity, it can occur in any segment of the spinal column and cause cord compression and spinal instability. Thus, proper treatment planning is crucial for total tumor resection to avoid tumor recurrence and correct spinal imbalance.
