This paper describes a light and efficient method for implementing audio video communication in a handheld device. The proposed system makes use of real time streaming protocol (RTSP) for call setup. It does not make use of any of the standard signaling protocols like session initiation protocol (SIP), session description protocol (SDP), H.323 based protocols, etc. which are generally used for audio video communication over a network. The paper discusses the suitability of the proposed method over the conventional session initiation protocol (SIP)/H.323 based video telephony/conferencing method in handheld devices. The method is highly efficient in handheld devices where resources and processing capabilities are limited. The paper describes multiple scenarios and explains the significance. Experimental results are provided which clearly bring out the advantages of the method proposed in this paper.
