Auch wenn das Wort »Toleranz« in aller Munde ist, trifft man auf die Thematik der Toleranz als erziehungswissenschaftliches Problem doch eher selten. Was im Alltag rasch über die Lippen kommt, erweist sich bei genauerem Zuhören oft als flach und einfach. Bei näherer Betrachtung entpuppt sich der Begriff »Toleranz« und erst recht seine Klärung für Theorie und Praxis als außerordentlich komplex und anspruchsvoll. Was meint jenes ›Dulden‹ (lat. tolerare) in pädagogischen Kontexten bzw. -und weitaus folgenreicher -wo liegen die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Toleranz bzw. tolerantem Handeln? Und wo -und diese Frage dürfte mindestens genauso schwierig sein -ist intolerantes Handeln zugunsten der Wahrung von Toleranz geboten und gefordert? Der Toleranz, so hatte es einst scharfsinnig der Wiener Philosoph Karl Popper formuliert, wohnt ein gewisses Paradox inne: »Uneingeschränkte Toleranz führt mit Notwendigkeit zum Verschwinden der Toleranz. Denn wenn wir die uneingeschränkte Toleranz sogar auf die Intoleranten ausdehnen, wenn wir nicht bereit sind, eine tolerante Gesellschaftsordnung gegen die Angriffe der Intoleranz zu verteidigen, dann werden die Toleranten vernichtet werden und die Toleranz mit ihnen.« (Karl Popper: »Die offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde« [Band I, 2003, 8. Aufl., S. 361f]). Toleranz lässt sich nicht in einem universalistischen Sinne fassen, sie bewegt sich stets innerhalb gewisser (moralischer und politischer) Grenzen und ist von daher notwendig beschränkt.Es gehört zur grundlegenden Charakteristik demokratischen (Zusammen-) Lebens, sich in Toleranz zu üben und gegenüber Andersdenkenden tolerant zu sein. Darüber hinaus verlangt uns Demokratie aber ebenso Intoleranz ab; nämlich gegenüber jenen, die durch ihr Denken und Tun Freiheiten anderer einschränken, bedrohen, gefährden und eine rationale Diskurskultur verunmöglichen. Toleranz und Intoleranz -und damit wird eine Herausforderung an Erziehung und Bildung gerichtet -verweisen auf handelnde Personen, die qua Einsichten und Argumenten situativ vernünftig zu handeln wissen und sich in tolerantem Handeln üben und auszudrücken vermögen.
